Too obvious, too repetitive, not enough ecology. Rav's an idiot and Nell's not believable.

Dr. Nell Ward is back, and she and Rav Kashyap have been busy for the last two years on a rewilding project at Finchmere, which they’ve documented extensively on social media. Rav has garnered a number of passionate fans, to Nell's bemusement, but both are thrilled with the progress they've made.

They've also been busy getting ready with local artisans and vendors employed on Finchmere land to host a festival to showcase all their efforts. Someone, however, has it in for Nell, as they're totally obsessed with Rav, and make several attempts to harm and kill Nell, much to their horror. At first Rav can't imagine anyone stalking him, but each attack, and then the murders, convince him that this is a very serious problem. James, their friend and the local DI, is run off his feet trying to solve the case so he can keep his friends safe from all the potential suspects, most of whom seem to be some form of shady or in lust with Rav.

I love the way the ecological science is used to solve the mystery of the identity of the stalker. Nell's and Rav's relationship is progressing well, and believably, though I felt a wee bit frustrated with how Rav wasn't taking the stalking and his security as seriously as they merited, but that did change as the story progressed.

I've read all the stories so far in this series, and though this one had a somewhat more complicated plot and slightly confusing set of motives than previous entries, I still really enjoyed this novel.

Thank you to Netgalley and to Embla Books for this ARC in exchange for my review.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.
I'd rate this book as light/beach reading, 3.5 out of 5
You do need to have read at least one book in this series before.

I've been enjoying this series of books as I like the 'hook' - that the main characters are ecologists, and some kind of forensic ecology always plays into the plot and solving the mystery.

Nell and Rav are back at Finchmere, and the action takes place over the weekend of a big event to celebrate and display the results of the rewilding project there. To add to the stress, Nell's house burns downs - is it arson or carelessness?

There's also a lot of conflict among the artisans and staff at the fete, and this really adds to the pressure our main characters are facing. A series of increasingly violent murders of people closely connected to Nell and Rav increases the tension and confusion (although I don't really understand how the fete doesn't get cancelled by the police).

Oddly, the main characters are more likable (they're working together better) and the twisty plot carries on to a rather tidy end. If you like your cosy mysteries a bit sciency and a bit bloody, you'll probably enjoy this series.

Ugh. Although I enjoyed the nature, this book just reinforced how I felt about the other books. Rav is the worst.

It’s been a minute since I read a Dr. Nell Ward mystery! I enjoyed this hike through the English countryside as a stalker wreaks mayhem on Nell and her boyfriend Rav’s lives. The bodies pile up amidst discussions of re-wilding and the twists just keep coming– I actually, correctly guessed whodunnit and feel mightily pleased with myself for figuring that out before the big reveal. This feels like a Miss Marple mystery (British village, minimal language, no sex on page) but set in contemporary times (YouTube channel, solar panels, Land Rovers), and I would continue to recommend the series.
