Arthur's character arc in this book is elite, does 10 years of work as leader of camelot, making descions he hates to keep the peace for a spoilt brat of a king, so he can retire on a farm. But then it is all ripped away. The ending was obvious throughout the book but still hits like a ton of bricks when revealed.

Merlin, derfel, and nimue are also great in this book, but the clear focus is on arthur, his mistakes and his fate to become king

Excellent second book in the trilogy of Arthur. The author creates a intriguing tale for this legendary figure. As the saga continues this novel is loaded with action, betrayal and amazingly written scenes of sword play and startling revelations. Highly entertaining.

This was just what I needed to read at the time. A straightforward, well-written, unproblematic fantasy novel inspired by King Arthur.

Enemy of God follows the Arthur characters we’re used to, but focuses on the protagonist Derfel Cadern a lot more. In this novel, he is a father and husband and Arthur’s right-hand man amid a growing tension between the Christians and the pagans.

The writing is clear and succinct, while still leaving room for characters’ emotions and other details. The plot is pretty basic fantasy—dramatic, battle-ridden—but I enjoyed myself. I especially liked how there were no sex scenes and, even when nudity was mentioned, it was as brief as possible. It’s rare to see a male fantasy author not lose his entire mind while describing a pretty fifteen-year-old girl simply going about her business. So, even though the author shouldn’t get props for something so simple, I was happy to see that.

The only reason it wasn’t 5 stars is that I don’t feel it did anything unique or special with the plot, unless you consider having a solid, well-paced plot special.
