3.75/5. I found the shifting timelines a little hard to follow at times, but overall: so good.

Confusing, and thought provoking because it does not follow a linear time line.

It's an intriguing story and the author has some fun tricks up her storytelling sleeve, but the book is ultimately too hit-and-miss, especially with regard to pacing and narrative coherence.

this book was just - just weird. Honestly. It was a little pointless and rambled a bit and had a bunch of events but no real climax and I don't even know. Not my cup of tea, and also, like, too many bouncing back and forth between POV (first and third) and an unsatisfactory ending. The writing was fluid and it read quickly but that did little to disguise the fact that it was bland.

Very mystical, and intriguing characters. It's a good thing the story is short, it leaves us in an ambiance of uncertainty that was quite well developed.

Overall, I enjoyed it, although I felt like it maybe should have been a little bit longer.

I listened to the audiobook, and do have a few criticisms about the narration, though. The main character is American, but the narrator sounded like an Irish person using an American accent. I looked her up later, and it turns out she's Canadian and lives in London, so maybe some of that trans-Atlantic sound has rubbed off. I dunno. She did a good job with the posh English and (I think) the Mancunian accent as well, although I think the New Yorker character's accent was a bit overdone. However, while I didn't like the narration very much, it wasn't bad enough to detract from the book.

Three stars, but a solid three stars, a page-turner.

Three "road friends," in Greece in their teens and twenties live out any mother's worst nightmare of the kids abroad. The "Lower Depths" of the backpacking, beach sleeping, slum dwelling, border-line and edge cases. (Truth be told, it reminded me of my wastrel years.) The deal is the three friends are eminently likable, and the girl lead - Bridey - is just a tatterdemalion joy.

It's a mystery to boot.
