This book is like a collection of my values and thoughts on what the good life consists of. Very charming with illustrations and the cultural background of danish home life. Some parts felt very repetitive and I could have done without the ski chalet stories (felt a little like humble bragging, minus the humble), but otherwise I really enjoyed this little book about my new favorite word! Happy Hygge!!
I very much enjoyed this exploration of the Danish art of coziness. The voice was delightful - comical and a bit cheeky.

This was such a sweet listen 🎧.
It honestly felt like listening to a cozy podcast with someone I’d want to be friends with.
And now I’m convinced: I might actually be Danish at heart!
What I loved is that these principles of hygge: coziness, connection, ritual, are already things I naturally lean toward, but Meik gave them language, shape, and (most importantly) permission.
Permission to light the candles.
Permission to linger over cake without guilt. Permission to make my space soft and warm and deeply mine.
I even learned where to get the best hygge lighting (because apparently, that’s a whole art form), and I realized I could absolutely thrive in Denmark.
This little book brought to my awareness that I want to live hygge more intentionally.

This is not the first book on hygge that I read, but it the first one that actually describes hygge as it should be. This book made me happy, made me feel cozy and that is exactly what hygge is.
It gave great examples, case studies and, paired with recipes, activity ideas with your friends and family and beautiful photographs, created the perfect hygge atmosphere.
People hating on this, on the idea of hygge, calling it some hipster bullshit, are clearing experiencing the opposite of what this is all about and I do not want that negativity in my life. Hygge is about wanting to be happy, to unwind and calm down. Life goes by really fast and this book legit taught me how to slow down every once in a while and just look at life and reflect on my own happiness.
If you want to take a moment and to try to figure out how to see happiness, how to understand if you are satisfied with your life and what you really want in your unplug moments, give this cozy thing a read. You will enjoy it. It also has pretty pictures.

Oh dear. This is Hygge, after IKEA has commodified it and made a product line out of it. The book just went on, and on, and on about warm socks and mulled wine and walks in the forest. This sort of thing is hygge, and a chapter of it would have set the scene nicely, but a whole book? I felt like my intelligence was being insulted after several hundred pages. When he started talking about the humble simplicity of hygge that his family enjoyed in their "rustic little weekender," I was certain that he was living in a parallel universe. I thought the whole concept of hygge was that it could be universally enjoyed, did not require lavish spending etc.
Just when I was about to give up, he included a really interesting piece about the link between low working hours, high wages and a welfare state and that in his mind this is why Danish people are so happy blah blah. The dude is a happiness researcher and I would love to read his more academic work on the social and economic determinants of happiness... Several hundred pages about how hot chocolate and soft blankets are nice things? Not so much.
