A book from yesteryear. This was one of my first reads from Dean Koontz, way back when he still rocked the “R”. Having read all of his “early” works, this is for sure top 2 or 3. So I was a little worried about re reading it.
It’s all good.
I do think that this holds up pretty well, nearly 49 years later. I enjoyed the characters, story and actions this book has to offer. It’s one of the reasons why I fell in love with his stories. Action almost immediately, constant and always great characters. Carnivals have always held a place for my horror heart, as is with a lot of horror enthusiast. What could be more scary than clowns and carnivals?
If you’re looking to check this out from your last, then you can’t go wrong. If you’ve never read Koontz’s older works and have only read his new stuff then I’d say you’re in for a great treat and may find yourself looking for all of his older work.

I read this decades ago so if it’s bad, blame young me. But I’m a sucker for carnivals and amusement parks.
This has still got to be my all-time favourite Koontz novel. I have re-read it numerous times, and will no doubt continue to do so. I still feel like there should be a sequel to it!
Slim McKenzie and Rya Raines are two of the coolest characters in the world of fiction. And this book actually made me want to run and join the carnival.

Love the concept, hate the writing style.

I can’t rate this book as I find myself unable to finish it or even want to. It’s just soo dull. I wasn’t scared or terrified and the amount of god and devil imagery and goblins it was just boring. Anyway sorry but this has nothing on phantoms... which was truly terrifying this is just boring and dull.

This book was…weird. I LOVED book one. I loved the characters and the carnival setting. I liked the way it was written.
Book two, which was written years later apparently, did not hold my interest as much. It felt slower, and I found it to be overwritten at times.
Overall I enjoyed this, but book one was the standout.
If I ever re-read the book, I’d only read book one.
