An absolutely haunting take on Galatea. Gorgeously violent and vindictive, taught with unease, and cathartically healing for survivors (potentially).

Speaking of: survivors of domestic violence, abuse, and/or sexual assault could have PTSD alarms set off. There were parts that deeply nauseated me, but the end is worth it.

Gorgeous, haunting, and incredibly effective in such a small amount of story. Madeline Miller takes a myth often adapted into a comedic romance, reveals its violent core, and then destroys it with a stoic, brave, and incredible main character. It’s so short, but brutally emotional and triumphant. I admire and love this version of Galatea so much. And the afterwards by the author adds some really informative and thoughtful context.

Content warning for marital rape and implied threat of the sexual abuse of children.

Audio Arc from LibroFM
TW: Medical abuse, intimate partner abuse, rape, sexual abuse

This was gorgeous and devastating. One of the things I love about Miller’s work is how in grounding mythology in a pragmatic reality the subtext becomes text. The brutal reality of being a woman literally created by a man resonates deeply and reflects the harrowing reality of women’s relationships with men.

Ruth Wilson’s narration was (as always) beautifully nuanced, breathing life into Galatea.

Although it is brief and slightly one-dimenosional, it is a heartbreaking about narcissistic abuse and a feminist reimagining of the “Pygmalion” myth is always welcomed.

While I really wanted to love this short story given the subject matter, I just didn’t. I read for joy and this was far too hard hitting to enjoy it.
