Interesting god mythology meets the present day. A good read, seemed to wrap up pretty quickly for me though.
Hunger Games meets Greek mythology. Every 7 years the Agon begins again, where old gods and new fight with their hunters—a punishment from Zeus for turning against him. Lore was raised as a hunter. The Agon claimed everyone she’s loved. All she wants is out.
So I really enjoyed several aspects of this book. The story line, some of the characters, and the plot. But one thing I didn’t like that made me mad was when the author made the main character make a stupid life altering decision that everyone knew was a bad idea and she made it anyway just to carry the storyline forward. That angered me and made me want to stop reading altogether. The main character shouldn’t have to make a dumb decision just to move the story forward. To me, that’s just lazy writing. And if she does, can it please not be so glaringly obvious to everyone. That took away some of the awesome of the book and made it just meh
A really unique and interesting take on the Greek mythos. The author clearly has a very deep knowledge of the old tales as it comes out in a hundred subtle details. Our hero Lore is flawed but engaging and you can’t help but root for her and her ragtag band of heroes as they fight against a Fate that is both surprising and inevitable.
The pacing of this book was all over. It reads like the second book in a series— and probably should’ve been. Both overly long and under developed. But an idea that keeps you reading.
Oh I loved this.
I kept waiting to see why people disliked it and i don’t see it at all. It’s very plot heavy (which I like personally) and I love Greek mythology. There were many twists and I had no idea what was gonna happen so I was just along for the ride.
Could some characters be more fleshed out? Sure. But complaints that people were just uselessly sexist are just…silly to me. People really do think like this even outside of a misogynistic Ancient Greek community. Maybe some people think it’s heavy handed but I felt like it was pretty accurate of many men out there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Anyway I loved it. Really consumed me for the last half of the book. I guess my complaint is that it was very long, it felt like I was barely making any progress—but that’s fine!
CW: rape

This has been one of my most anticipated reads for MANY MOONS, so when I saw it on the ARC shelf of my local indie bookstore, and the owner saw the stars in my eyes, it immediately became mine. (Have I mentioned recently that you should love you indie bookstores? LOVE YOUR INDIE BOOKSTORES.)
I went into Lore with both too much hope and very little hope at all. I've loved everything Greek mythology since I was a teeny tiny goblin flipping through my parents' old encyclopedia set. And I've seen too many books with incredible premises based on Greek mythology fail miserably to hit the mark. I was terrified this would be more of the same. Do you know how difficult it is to blend ancient mythos with a modern setting and make it actually work? Never mind the premise of this story...the blurb reads as 10% batshit crazy and 90% WAY TOO BIG to do in one book.
I admit. I was hopeful, but not expecting much.
This book blew my every dream, wish, hope, desire, and expectation out of the water. The care the author takes to blend the setting and the mythology, to make modern day New York City feel like an ancient battlefield straight out of legend is, itself, legendary. The way she weaves the story together in a way that isn't only coherent (when it had no right to be, honestly) but beautiful is just...I don't even have words. The way the builds friendships and relationships between and around all the heart-pounding action is downright masterful.
I'm not really coherent enough to say much more, my mind is still stuck on ENDLESS SCREAM and MUST HUG BOOK FOREVER but if I could recommend one single book you should order immediately, it would be this book. Finished copies release next month and it is SO VERY WORTH IT.

“I was born knowing three things — how to breathe, how to dream, and how to love you.”
*Sigh* I had such high expectations for this one; Greek mythology with a modern twist, author of Greek decent, and amazing cover! BUT..I just didn’t connect with it the way I hoped I would.
It took me foreveeeer to actually finish this as I would pick it up and after a couple of chapters put it back down. I actually preordered Lore so I’ve been struggling to read it since the time it was published. I just really wanted to finish it in hopes that it’d get better towards the end.
Bracken’s world was at times confusing and I felt like most of the characters were pretty shallow, lacking depth and complexity. I actually liked how badass Lore was and loved her childhood love with Castor. I felt like Bracken wanted to draw as many parallels as possible between Lore and Athena so her character ended up not growing as I hoped she would.
A lot of the characters felt purposeless and unimportant. But can we actually get a book about Miles and Van? Like I’d definitely read that instead!

Lore was a massive re-imagining of the Greek gods in modern times. It was full of adventure, action, and intrigue from the first chapter which kept me turning pages to figure out what was going on, learn more about what happened to Lore seven years before the current events, and who was going to win this epic battle of gods and heroes. The action was definitely the most prominent aspect of this novel, followed by character development, and then world building. The main character, Lore, had a definitive (if predictable) character arc but was cast way too young for what she accomplished (not that 17 year olds can't accomplish big things - but the way she was written felt at least early twenties). The world building was compelling but not done tremendously well; it was confusing at times and I kept having to go back and reference the families pages and who was associated with which god. The ascension process was also really colluded. The ending felt a little forced, like the author had written herself into a corner and shoehorned in a semi-workable solution to get out of it. Overall, it was an fun and action-packed thrill ride that I'll likely read again.
This was an odd book. Definitely a Greek mythology meets Hunger Games vibe. It is nice to have a good stand alone book with a satisfying ending but it was definitely missing something. The character development was a little shallow and the romance aspect felt a little thrown in. Overall though it was a decent boom.
