Oh my gosh, this book was an absolute delight. It beautifully blends together Greek mythology with a hunger game like scenario to it. There were lots of nice twists and turns and even a fake out or two. The character development was beautiful and I love the chemistry between the characters. Definitely a great read. And an easy read. Engaging. Just delightful.

The start was difficult. I definitely found it long and tedious. However, I really enjoyed the book once Athena and Lores relationship was the focus. Loved the actio and plot twists. The romance was meh, but I think that was the point. (I'm also not a huge fan of friends to lovers) I loved the concept of the book however found it really violent.

“When we can’t change the past, the only thing left is to move forward.”
I came into this with low expectations after seeing a fair few low reviews in the first couple of weeks - but I don't really get why, as it was such easy reading. I loved how the myths were blended in, and the sheer brutality of it all. It's also rounded up pretty nicely, which I was worried about after realising it's a standalone at about the 95% completed mark. Now I need to check out Alexandra's previous works.

⭐️***3.5 STARS***⭐️
Immediately want to start with this is a good book. The overall rating of 3.77 that it has I think is fair. It should have been better. Let’s get the good stuff going so we can get into the bad stuff, which was a lot.
Good:
Loved how important every character felt even down to Belen and Iro. They all seemed to belong. I mostly like every character, Van and Athena easily stealing the top 2 for me.
I liked the story telling and the whole idea really, gods and Greek mythology existing and having to be a apart of the world today. It’s interesting, I am very glad no guns were in this either.
My favorite thing by far…the plot twist. I should have seen this coming but I didn’t. It was kind of predictable but in a good way. I was disgusted and my stomach actually hurt BUT in a good way.
Now for the bad:
Lore and Castor are so annoying. Wining all day long.
How are you going to say you only trust this small group of people whom you are with battling these enemies but go against and not trust anything they say? About plans, about you, or most of all about the goddess who wants to kill all of you?
Let’s also mention the beginning of this book is very bad. Too much information that isn’t needed and it was so slow I almost had to DNF it until my sister in law said to buddy read it. Though I am glad I pushed through. Overall this book should have been 60-80 pages shorter. 400 at most.
My least favorite thing is when authors will write out an action a character does over and over and over that doesn’t add to the storyline or character. “Lore bit down so hard on the inside of her cheek, she could taste her own blood.” Why? It drives me crazy….I could be just really overly picky with that one but idc.
I needed more fighting, while I enjoyed what was given I needed more, should have been more. Greek gods and goddesses are known for their fighting why wasn’t there more? The last fight with Lore, Wrath, and Athena was so underwhelming, we deserved more.
Finally I will mention that Athena NEVER would have let somebody kill her, I don’t think that’s realistic. Lore should have battled her and won.
I’d recommend but also warn before reading.

Thank you to NetGalley for sending me this e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
When I heard the pitch that this was an urban fantasy novel about Greek mythology, that this was Percy Jackson meets the Hunger Games, I knew I was gonna love this. I loved Lore as our main character, and I loved the main group and the way their friendship developed, from being hesitant allies to truly caring for one another. (And of course I have to mention that this employed one of my favorite tropes of all time, childhood best friends to lovers!!) Athena was such a complex character, and I truly did not expect the direction that Alexandra Bracken took her. I honestly wish this wasn't a standalone because I want to keep following this cast of characters. While I liked what development we did get with the side characters, there's so much more we could delve into.
The plot also had me hooked right from the beginning, there was a seamless blend between flashbacks and present day that always kept me intrigued, and there were so many gosh darn good plot twists. The story really delves with processing trauma, wanting revenge for injustice, and the inherent sexism in the institutions of the Greek bloodlines that victimizes so many women. It interrogates a lot of Greek myths through a feminist lens which I really enjoyed seeing.
I just really loved this and thought it was a fantastic fantasy standalone!
