Wow et imponerende værk. Var bestemt ikke behagelig læsning men gribende.

“I have to start bringing this to an end.”
This line made me want to stop reading. I didn’t want this to end, I wanted the fever dream to continue, keep going forever, I wanted more and more despite how boring the book was at times, despite how terrible it was, how sick it made me, despite me wanting to rip it into million pieces and never come back to it again. I fell in love with Max, no matter how perverted and crazy he was, no matter how much blood and shit there was on his hands, no matter how many times he disappointed me or surprised me with his inhumanity. I fell in love with his character, I fell in love with Littell — he doesn’t write caricatures, he writes real characters with a real story. This man is a genius. The Kindly Ones is a book that WILL change your life.

Up until the part where Max went to his sister's house near the end I wanted to give the book 5 stars. The mix of different plots from different books spoilt everything for me.

Someone already said that you either love or hate this book. Well, I'm firmly on the hating side. There are many elements I find lacking, but the main ones (in my opinion) are: the print--slabs of text without paragraphs and even dialogues jammed in without separation, extremely unappetizing to read; characterization--the characters are undeveloped and unconvincing in every aspect; the story--undoubtedly rigorously researched historical period didn't translate into a captivating story and the ending seems insulting for the reader, rushed and without even trying to be convincing. I wish I can get back the time wasted on this book.

The banality of evil.
