Now I gotta say that this part of the Animorphs series was refreshing as it was Ax's first narrated book. I love his perspective on how tenacious and great humans are as well as his feelings towards being in Elfangor's shadow. It provided a whole new layer to his character besides being comic relief. Well, he is super funny. But that's besides the point.

I love how he adheres to Andalite tradition, but demonstrates clear human qualities that make him easier to connect with. For example, his loneliness from his people really resonated with me as a child who wanted to fit in.

Now, I know why Ax was one of my favorite Animorphs-

Wow, these books getting better with every entry!
I love Ax so much man, like he is my character at this point. Him and Tobias are such great character with an interesting rationship between the two of them. This alongside Ax's own personal conflict that goes throughout the story and the way the characters all react is very interesting. Though many of the characters take a back seat in this one, it makes a lot of sense as it is Ax's story and it is he who separates himself from them as the story progresses. Even with this, though, his friends still come through and help him even when he thinks he shouldn't get their help, which is just so nice and really uplifting in a kids book, especially as dark as this one...because, oh man is this dark, like, the others are dark too and maybe it's because I took a short break before delving into this one, but this one felt the darkest of them all so far. That being said, I am expecting them to get much darker, especially when Alloran says that the Yeerks have infested their home planet...ohhh man.
