It’s hard to rate non-fiction books. I can’t possibly hold this up to the same standard of pure entertainment as fiction books - I picked it up expecting to learn something from it.

Could it have been more engaging? Yes. The author did sometimes feel like she was just reporting scientific findings about dreams, but the sheer uniqueness of the subject matter saved the book from ever becoming truly boring. The book also managed to bring me on a tour of the whole surprising world of dream researchers and enthusiasts, and the author’s passion for the subject really shone through.

In the end, the book did encourage me to pay more attention to my own dreams and have a greater appreciation of how they could be helpful to me, and also served to comfort me that my constant sharing of my wildest dreams with my friends was actually helpful and not purely annoying, so I guess it definitely achieved its purpose.

Thank you to NetGalley, Eamon Dolan/Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Alice Robb for an ARC ebook copy to review. As always, an honest review from me.

Why We Dream is a highly interesting and informative read. I learned a lot about the history of dream research and sleep, lucid dreaming, the psychology of sleep, dream interpretation, the influence of culture on dreams, and much more. There’s a whole culture of people who focus on dream interpretation that I didn’t know about. It’s fascinating. I found myself relating the information I learned, to people in my life.

However, some aspects of dream culture are a little too out there for me, and probably most of mainstream culture.

Overall, a great read that blends the psychology of sleep with dream analysis.

The science in this book is well done. However, parts were a bit dry. I think this book would be best read with a group of people so you have a group of people to discuss your dreams and the topics in this book.

Wow, I knew my dreams were atypical, but damn, my dreams are atypical. Sounds like I should offer to be a research subject?

Why We Dream is an approachable primer that explores dream science and contemporary research on the subject. It is not as transparently antagonistic to Freud as I anticipated, but the book is far from a theoretical exploration of dream theory.
