While I enjoyed this book, it’s hard not to compare it to her hugely successful debut, The Hate U Give. This isn’t as strong as THUG, but it still set a consistent tone for Thomas and her writing. I also like the raps interwoven in the storyline which showed another level to her talent. However, I was conflicted about the main character, Bri, as she really made some decisions that had me shaking my head in frustration that were hard to overlook.
Verhaal: 5/5

Herlezen: Ja!
Angie Thomas is an amazing writer! She weaves realistic stories that are relevant to today's teens. This book was a great example of how she has brought the struggles of the urban teen to the forefront. I had a harder time with this one than Thomas' first book, mainly because I do not listen to hip-hop, and don't know many of the artists. I'm glad I did this one as an audiobook, because it allowed me to hear the flow of the raps. Bre is a character with character. I wish she had realized sooner that people were using her to push their own agenda. I know that's the moral lesson of the story, but I still wish it.
On the Come Up by Angie Thomas
Have you read any books by Angie Thomas? I adore her style of writing. The words flow so easily and I get lost in her books.
On the Come Up is about Bri, a teenager from the Garden. She is extremely talented and has dreams of becoming a rapper. Bri is an amazing main character. She is incredibly honest and the whole book reads like a conversation with a friend. I loved learning about how she views the world and her relationships.
Similar to The Hate U Give, I couldn’t put this book down. Angie Thomas is so creative and has a gift for writing about family relationships.
I would love to see this as a movie

I love Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give, especially after having her seen her in person when she was promoting this novel. On the Come Up is about Starr Carter, who has a true gift for rap, taking after her dad who was gunned down in the streets. She traverses a world of gang violence and school, where she feels like she can never get ahead. She's damned if she tells her truth through rap, and she's damned if she doesn't. Generally not drawn to rap because of the misogny in much of it, I now have a much greater appreciation for the art of hip hop. I will read everything Angie Thomas writes.
A teen wanting to help out her struggling family uses her lyrics as a way out.
Angie Thomas is my favorite author. She is incredible and this story is addicting. I couldnt out it down.
I wonder if I had read this book before The Hate U Give (also known as THUG) if I would give On the Come Up 5 stars and then assign 3 to THUG? It’s possible because they are kind of the same book in a way. On the Come Up is slightly repetitive.
The storyline is different and there are different characters; I learned a lot of slang I didn’t yet know, but the story arc is basically the same. And that’s okay, if doesn’t make it a bad book; it’s just not as fresh-feeling and “wham” as THUG was for me having read it first. THUG gave me deep cuts, and On the Come Up just kinda scratched them open again.
Both books need a wide readership. Folks who grow up in Brianna’s world or anything close to it will feel soul-changing empathy in the knowledge that they are not alone. Folks who live basically on another planet from “the Garden” and metal detectors in schools need to read Angie Thomas to at least attempt to understand the endless, hopeless
cycle of not being able to better yourself or things for your family despite best efforts.
Both are excellent books, probably whichever one you read first will “wham” you. Thomas drops you right into the scene. I’ve heard that the narration of these books on audio is excellent, so if you like audiobooks I imagine that would be a good experience.
