I would absolutely recommend the audiobook. I'm not sure I would have enjoyed this nearly as much without listening. A lot of her home life feelings and happenings were hard to listen to because I've gone through that and I know that pit in your stomach feeling. I loved her family and everyone's connections to each other were strong. The struggle between right and wrong, and being a kid where the world doesn't give you an option to just be a kid, and drugs in the community, and some much more than meets the eye themes were executed so well. There is not anything I would change to improve the narrative.

Um livro que me fez mergulhar em um mundo totalmente fora de minha zona de conforto. Nunca fui fan de hip hop, mas este livro me fez repensar algumas coisas, em especial a perfomance final da protagonista, que foi de arrepiar, principalmente ao ouvir o audiobook. Lindo demais.
Powerful, eye-opening (for this non-hiphop loving white girl), and beautiful story of resilience and family and being true to oneself.
Good lord, Angie Thomas knows how to create characters! I love her characters, and I love her!
My least favorite book by Angie Thomas. It wasn’t bad, but I didn’t like Bri as a main character. I’m sure there’s a reason, but I don’t like when it seems like the story is just representing and reinforcing harmful Black stereotypes.
I LOVED The Hate U Give (as did thousands... millions? of others) I couldn't wait for Angie Thomas' second book to come out. I was worried... would it live up to THUG? I am so happy to say that yes it definitely holds up. Angie Thomas is an amazing writer.
OTCU is definitely its own book... and Bri is her own character. She is strong like Starr but so very different. There were times I was so mad at Bri, I wanted to scream at her. I think that was the mom in me. Even up until the end she was making decisions that were not necessarily good and not listening to advice she was given by her brother or friends. But I felt for Bri. This girl thought she was doing what was needed in order to "save her family".
This is what Angie Thomas does best. She writes complicated characters just trying to live their best life. She makes you think about the situation people may be in. She shows extremely well that the world is NOT black and white (not as in color of your skin) but so many shades of gray. What choices are made (right or wrong) in order to survive. She also makes a point of showing that the "Garden Heights" of the country are not just gang infested, crime loving, murdering neighborhoods. She paints a vivid picture of these neighborhoods showing the good and the bad and the inbetween.
I am so happy give On the Come Up 5 stars. But let me make a suggestion.. if you can, get the audiobook because just as Angie Thomas' writing is amazing, it is even better when read by Bahni Turpin. Her narration is always on point but her rapping in the audio version just made it that much better.
