Incredible. I needed more than 700 pages, honestly. I’ll be snagging the next one (if and when it comes out). The history of the Targaryen family is complex, intriguing, and heart-wrenching. Martin wrote the book as if it were a history text, and I don’t think there was any other way to tell the story of such a broken lineage.

King Jeahaerys I, the Old King and his queen, Alysanne, the Good Queen have to be my favorite reign. I’m interested to see what Martin does with the rest of the line up until Robert Baratheon takes over. I will say, however, that Aegon III’s (the Unlucky) regents got too much of a storyline for me.

George R. R. Martin… I am honoured to be alive at the same time as this man. How can he write a book in an historical fiction style about a complex and engaging world that he created himself, have nearly zero dialogue and do it so good? I couldn’t put down this book. The characters are so interesting, so deep  and the story so well constructed that I just couldn’t stop reading more and more.
