I found this book very hard to get into. The first half was slow, and felt quite stilted, so I just kept putting the book diwn, but the second half caught my interest more, and I read it within a couple of days. The biggest one for me, although the story is all about Clio's suicide, is that I cried at Eileen's chapter at the end, and not at all before that. The short look into Eileen's addled mind as she fails to understand Clio is dead, is heartbreaking.

Needed to brush my modern studies higher off for this one 😅

I found it a slow burn but was hooked half way through I can just be funny with books that jump perspectives and timelines but I ended up finding it's rhythm and I can see why the author chose this style.

Love how you felt you knew Clio without ever having heard from her perspective. Favourite character was Sammi by far. What happened to her especially with
Mark made me feel ill for her and the fact it is based on real events is mad

Also heavily pictured the character Spider as Spider from Coronation street (IYKYK). If Natasha Lyonne could do a Scottish accent she would be my pick to play Clio when she's older.

A beautiful novel about the complexity of humans and how one person can be so different to so many. Beautifully written without the writing being too flowery. Highly recommend.

nice easy read, engaging and enjoyed reading a book so rich in scottish heritage and culture. i was intrigued by the plot and uncovering the story of clio, and i thought the ending was great and rounded off the book perfectly, but did have my reservations: one, that it felt like the book was trying to do too much, encompass too many people and demographics and points of view. i’m not going to fall into the well trodden path of saying its ‘too inclusive’ because i dont necessarily think that is possible if done well, but i just felt like there was a lot of views and ideas and people who were vying to be represented that it just made the whole thing feel a bit too preachy and thinly spread. also there were clear bits in the book where there were huge long lengthy speeches from the characters, which i get were supposed to seem like a manifesto or a soliloquy but really just came off as unnatural, as the writer themself speaking through the guise of one of their characters (like the bit with clio speaking about her makeup: felt really overdone and unnatural). overall enjoyed it but definitely aspects which made me a bit… apprehensive? idk. 2.75 stars

Never managed to read a book the whole way through where I don't like any of the characters (except Donald) and still keep coming back to it. Reinvigorated my love for folk music and made me home sick for places I've never been and comrades I don't currently have.

Amazing book. Absolute new favourite of the year. Innes weaves such a complex story about a woman whose life and death are so intertwined with her politics and beliefs. A slow paced read full of character analysis from the people who loved, hated, and were affected by Clio Campbell. The Scottishness is amazing. We get a look at such important moments in Scottish history and see the scars left over. Cannot rave about this book highly enough!!

Interesting and exciting writing style, diverse characters (although hard to love the main character)
