I'll admit that I don't often read romance, even in YA fiction, but even so the pacing of this seemed odd. Aelyx spends a lot of the book doing something Caro will not like, secretively, then it doesn't have much impact. Hardly anyone on Earth asks Aelyx about his culture or tech. Cara makes an impassioned plea at one point about how the majority of humans are good, compassionate people who will be kind and welcoming and excited to learn and grow, but the book shows almost no evidence of this. I understand that this is talking about xenophobia and racism in real life, but it just felt... unrealistic. Luckily I'm not the target audience.

I don’t have a strong opinion of this book either way. It was a fun and quick read for me.

It was hard to connect with Cara. She seems very naive, and is so focused on her education and beating everyone else that she doesn’t ask enough questions. I do admire her for standing up for what she believes in. Aelyx was easier for me to like. He is pissed about being on Earth, and doesn’t know what do with these new feelings he’s exposed to. I think some of my favorite scenes were of Cara trying to find something he would be able to eat.

The thing I liked the most about Alienated is the social issues it dealt with. Treating someone badly because of their species isn’t exactly the right thing to do. All you show that person that you are capable of is hate and fear. I think it touched on those issues very well. My inner sociologist was so happy about this.

I really want to read the next book to see what happens. The ending of Alienated was great, and I have to know what’s next for both Cara and Aelyx.

AAHH!!! Words cannot describe how much I adore this book. I've always been partial to alien novels (it's one of my favorite genres). I just really love them. And when I saw this book about an alien exchange student program, (plus the awesome cover) I was completely on board. Alienated did not disappoint.
Everything about this book was well done. The characters were layered and there was plenty of character development to go around. The L'eihrs were fascinating and I can't wait to read more about them in the next book. The romance was also great. HOORAY for no instal-love or love triangles!
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes a good alien or romance novel. You won't be disappointed!! 4.5 stars

Fantastic book! Loved the writing style and the story! Can't wait for the second book!

I really enjoyed this book. And can't wait for the sequel to come out which will probably be a while since I got this book as a preview. I don't read a lot of alien YA books so this was a nice change of pace. It felt like unique and fresh which made it more enjoyable.
The book is told in dual narratives. Cara, the human, is a really relatable, strong female heroine. I immediately liked her. Aelyx, the alien, was standoffish and foreign at first (he's an alien so it makes sense that he wouldn't be as familiar) but he soon grows on you. The two meet due to a "foreign" exchange student program. Cara's family has been selected as one of the first host families for the aliens to visit.
I loved the alien world that Melissa created. It was so real and vivid. It was fascinating to learn about an alien world so similar and different than our own.
The best part of the book was the romance between Aelyx and Cara. It was steamy and intriguing. I totally bought into it.
As a teacher, I would recommend this book to my students. There is some sexual references but the characters don't go too far. Just take this with a grain of salt. I also think the book does provide for some good discussion topics. It deals with prejudice and xenophobia. Both of which have real world applications and you can draw a lot of parallels with what is going on in the book and what happens in real life. There could be some really cool extension activities that you could do with this book relating to those topics.
Can't wait to see more from Melissa Landers!

I loved how fast paced this book was! It was an interesting take on Alien life forms and their interactions with humans. It's pretty crazy to think how strongly people react to things they don't understand. I think the author does a great job in showing the truth of how horrid and disgusting people can be towards others. It was pretty sad to see how she was actually shunned by her community because of superficial reasons. They didn't know anything about Aelyx and totally thought of him as a threat.
I loved to see how he was just a blank slate and by the end of the book he was so much more human. He has emotions and understands so much more about the human race. One of my favorite things about this book is the fact that it was a growing love. It wasn't a, instant look and they fall in love, type of love. They didn't really like each other in the beginning and just tolerated each other. By the end of the book they fall in love but you get to see it grow. You get to see why they do and it's not based solely on how attracted they are to each other. It was really refreshing to see from a teen book. A bit more realistic.
Overall, I really thought this was an interesting read and I can't wait to read the second book. I'm really fascinated by what the whole world of L'eihr will be like. Even though, it was a bit predictable, I still really enjoyed it. Also, I had a total geek moment when I realized the author [a:Melissa Landers|5804715|Melissa Landers|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1333392569p2/5804715.jpg] lives like 15 MINUTES from me!! She lives in the heart of Cincinnati- Loveland! I couldn't believe it, so awesome!!!

I've been wanting to read this book for months, and I'm definitely relieved that I was able to finally locate a copy at my library! While I don't think that I'll be investing in a personal copy of this book, I thought it was an interesting, fast-paced read! If you're a lover of sci-fi and contemporary romance, give it a shot. :)

Maybe 3.5 stars

I think perhaps I’ve grown out of my perpetual love of the Paranormal Romance genre. Or possibly it’s the aliens. But as much as I though this book was well done, filled with delicious swoon and an enjoyable story, I just couldn’t get into it as much as I hoped.

Cara is hardworking and goal oriented. She has big plans for college and her future, including a career in journalism. As the top student in her school, she has been preselected to participate in an exchange program. Not just with someone on the other side of the country, or the world. But with someone from another galaxy entirely. You see aliens – who look remarkably like humans on earth - made contact two years ago and since that time, the two planets have been in peaceful negotiations. As there are understandably, many people hostile to the idea, one of the first steps to interplanetary relations will be this exchange program. One student will stay with Cara and study for a semester, and then she’ll go to the planet of L’eihr for a semester the following year. Cara is obviously reluctant, but among other reasons, she is hopeful that it will be a good thing for her future career. Cara’s alien exchange student Aelyx thinks he’s much better than the messy, less intelligent race that he’s being forced to live with, but he’s forced to reconsider his views when he meets Cara.

I thought the author did a nice job with her world building. She’d thought through the differences between the L’eihr and humans, as well as what would be the public’s reactions to an alien race inhabiting earth. The L’eihr’s are actually far more advanced than the humans, they have better medicine, the ability to speak to each other in their minds and are much less…chaotic than earth dwellers. But does that make them truly superior? I liked the discussion in this story about what it means to be human, the bad and ugly parts but also the beautiful ones.

I really enjoyed watching Aelyx experience earth for the first time, and seeing his prejudices diminish as he got to know Cara. I could also imagine what she went through, losing friends and acquaintances because of her affiliation with him. Many people are understandably worried about a different race of people inhabiting earth. Why are the L’eihr here? And what could they possibly want from the less advanced earthdwellers But I was in awe of her strength and determination not to let peer pressure change her views.

Cara and Aelyx’s relationship is paced really well, and I like that it took time for them to develop a connection. A lot of that is due to trust, but also Aelyx is not very familiar with the ways that humans show affection, and seeing him discover that is one of the most fun parts of this story. Also the most swoon inducing. I also really like the tension caused by Aelyx's prejudice and watching him work through that.

SpoilerI did have a bit of trouble with Cara's relationship with her best friend. I just thought that Cara forgave her WAY too fast after the way she treated her. Although I can see where something like Aelyx could alienate most of Cara's friends, I wish that she had some other relationships besides Aelyx during the book.

Love triangle dislikers, take note. There is a hint of a possible love triangle to come in book 2 that is teased in the last two chapters of the story. Now, nothing is certain, obviously. Cara and Aelyx are clear about their feelings. BUT even if it doesn’t become anything, I’m guessing clear romantic tension will come from that direction. That’s another thing about this book that seems inevitably standard PNR. Honestly, that small hint made me less likely to pick up the next one.

This was such a good read! I read this book in two days; I absolutely could not put it down! Books like that are my favorite. I probably should have been studying for my finals, but reading is a good stress reliever and study break option (well, not when that innocent 15 minute study break turns into a couple hours ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ).

The L’eihr alien race made contact with humans two years ago, and Cara immerses herself into the L’eihr exchange student program to earn money for a scholarship to college. What she doesn’t know is that a hot alien boy will be staying with her for a year. Cara doesn’t intend to feel anything for Aleyx, but falling for one another is inevitable when you’re sharing a bathroom with each other. As Cara and her family become outcasts of the community because of their involvement with the aliens, her only friend becomes Aelyx, who has secrets of his own that he has been keeping from Cara. Aelyx and Cara’s relationship in the book has its low and high points, but in the end, love ultimately prevails.

The storyline Landers creates is superb. She has created both strong male and female characters through developing their individual integrity and building romance and political conflict. The witty, comical writing in the book made me laugh out loud, causing my roommate to question my sanity at times. The bantering between Cara and Aleyx was just too perfect. At times, it felt like I was right there in the Sweeny’s living room watching the two star-crossed lovers play chess or “study” in the bedroom *wink wink*. Intriguing and suspenseful, this book will capture the hearts of both si-fi and contempory YA fiction readers! Thank god there is a sequel because I don’t want Cara and Aleyx’s story to end!
