Nowhere near as compelling as the first one. I thought all the fashion talk and introductions of the first book were the price to pay for the characters, but this one just focused on new fashion and new characters (who weren't as interesting as the ones from book one-- they even call Carlton/Colette the Colin/Araminta 2.0, but they had nowhere near the depth or lovability.)
School’s back in session so this took me a lot longer to read than expected! Pretty fun and silly. Nice and light
I read the first so long before I didn't remember all the characters. But this one seems more scattered in the storyline covering too many people. It also is written as the many second stories in a trilogy land where it's just setting things up for the next book without being great as a standalone. Was entertaining fluff and again would be great to be able to see all the opulence described. Will try and read the next one sooner so I don't forget everything that happened.
4 stars, didn’t like it quite as much as the first one but still super solid.

slow (and a little boring) in the beginning, but when it picked up it REALLY picked up!! what a perfect ending and way to wrap up every story up in the end. long live kitty pong and when will i finally meet MY charlie wu
This book was super fun, just like the first book was. Not quite as good as the first one, but these are honestly my perfect beach reads. This is basically modern Asian Downton Abbey (which I just started watching this month)!
In the first book, our main character Rachel Chu, an American-Born Chinese woman, is invited to a wedding in Singapore by her longtime boyfriend Nick Young, who is going to be the best man. Little does she know that Nick is heir to one of the biggest fortunes in Asia and everyone that she is going to be surrounded by in Singapore is Crazy Rich (duh). No spoilers for CRA ahead!
China Rich Girlfriend was much more of an ensemble piece than Crazy Rich Asians, even though it was as well. Like the first book, Rachel is the inciting incident but not the main character we follow. I feel like this installment was slightly more focused on the opulence and less on any plot, which took away from my enjoyment a bit, enough for me to like the first one better. In CRG, the plot seemed to be squished to the last thirty pages or so, even if there was set up for most of the book. My favorite character was Corinna by far; her plot with Kitty about raising potential social climbers into the aristocracy was the most interesting thing that happened. Overall, this was just a fun freakin' read. I'll definitely finish out this trilogy within the next year and maybe even pick up the book Kwan just released recently!
Star breakdown:
+ Great quick pacing
+ Corinna's plotline >>>
+ Incorporation of slang in multiple languages & great footnotes
+ All the drama!!
- Imbalance of plot vs description of opulence, plot concentrated to the end
