This book stood up on a re-read for me. This time around, I saw it like a modern retelling of a period multigenerational family melodrama, centring Asian characters, locations and themes. I really enjoyed the Asian elements of the book, as I identify as 2nd-gen Asian Australian. Though Kevin Kwan's books can often be superficial and farcical, this was a fun and fast-paced page turner for me. I'll probably happily read this again in a couple of years.

Not 4 stars because is so smart or mind-blowing, but it is a nice and simple read. Light hearted, for some reason, kept me reading. In my eyes, much better than the Crazy Rich Asians. I think Kevin Kwan decided to go way over the top which made it much more detached from reality for most people and easier to digest.

Such a delightful read!

Read 2019, Fiction, Realistic Fiction, Nonwhite/Non-European

maybe a 3.5

I liked it and it was cool reading about rich people again but idk it was kinda lacking
they decided to shake the plot up 3/4 of the way through and then just end on an open note to setup for the next one...
... which you will probably catch me reading soon

Social climbers. A near-death experience. Family feuds. I love an over-the-top drama — this book resonates with part of me that fell in love with the original Gossip Girl TV show.

Two thoughts: rachel and nick are the least interesting characters in the series…and a lot of reviews complained about excessive name dropping, but that’s sort of the point of book like this??? Can’t write a soapy comedy about rich folks without being at least a little pretentious.
