I was on the fence about whether to give this a three or a four. The main character/narrator was so irritating in her innocent shyness. How could she possibly take that much for so long without fighting back even a little? However, the story was a really good story which kept my interest and made me want to pick up the book, so four it is!

Actual rating: 4.5/5 stars!
I read this for the #coffeexobooksbc for the month of May. I wasn’t really knowing what the expect going into this. My sister had read it back in like 2006 and I had watched the movie with her after that. I was only 12 so I had no interest really in it at all. As I got older I grew interested in the idea of it and seeing as it was the book club month pick I said sure I’ll read it! Also I didn’t realize until like a chunk in that it was Hitchcock that adapted the book! I really like Hitchcock’s movies and am definitely excited to watch the movie this time around!
I found it very interesting. Our main character had no first name at all. No maiden name. She had no name until she became Mrs. de Winter. It’s very interesting that Daphne Du Maurier decided to never really give her a first name or any name therefore until she married Maxim de Winter. I found all the characters to be interesting but I hated Mrs. Danvers a lot. She was just a rude lady who was obsessed with Rebecca.
The twist that the novel takes and we learn about everything that happened to Rebecca was not expected at all. I didn’t but did see it coming. Let’s be honest here, once I knew it was Hitchcock that adapted the book and I’ve seen a handful of his movies and the choices in what he makes I could see the reason he chose the novel. He adapted her “The Birds” too and so maybe I could totally see it coming even though I didn’t... if that makes any sense. Going into it I was like I have no idea at all but after I got past it and into that part I was like yeah, that makes sense about it.
I recommend reading it. I really enjoyed it. I wasn’t expecting this at all from it but I found it really enjoyable and super bizarre.
