”There are two things in life you cannot choose. The first is your enemies; the second your family.

Carlos Ruiz Zafón and his writing will forever have my heart. The author has a way with words that makes reading feel so magical i completely loose myself within it.

Nonetheless, i was slightly disappointed with this book. It was definitely better than the 1st one but it just felt okay. Sometimes i found myself rushing through the words just to finish it and i’m not someone who enjoys doing it. Hopefully the third book is a bit better.

Enjoyed the book, but it wasn't as great as Zafon's two amazing adult novels. I just felt there were a few portions of the story that needed more explaining or "justification." I felt just a bit unsatisfied with some of it. It didn't hold together as perfectly as it could. But Zafon is still good at setting a scene that broods and simmers.

There are few authors whose work I can rely on completely to make me feel alive and to reaffirm my love of reading magical authors. Michael Chabon, Neil Gaiman, and Carlos Ruiz Zafon are those people.

CRZ is the master of the magical reality which his stories inhabit. They are finely tuned songs of pain, love, friendship, and persistence in the face of evil.

Recommended for anyone who likes well thought out stories.

I gave it 8.5/10 on my personal scale.

I love the idea of the book, and the youthful characters, but the setting of Calcutta fell flat and since the setting is supposed to be significant in the book, it hampered my enjoyment over all.

Another brilliantly-crafted thriller from Ruiz Zafon. He writes in such evocative settings, and does a wonderful job of combining the brutally real with the magical.
