Another Kodansha free volume 1 haul book! I am getting through them, whoo!
While I did love the art, loved how Bunko is, love seeing the cities and towns and scenery, and learning a bit more about Rakugo... I just wasn't clicking with it. Rakugo you need to experience, reading it on a page I just was bored. It was just flat. And the Tanuki was just mostly HIGHLY annoying and sadly a big part of the story. I am just not going to continue this one.

I received a copy of this manga through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I had no idea what Rakugo was and at first this manga did not feel like totally my cup of tea but it grew on me over the course of the story. The characters were cute, the situations funny and the art cute! I learned a lot about Rakugos and their art of story-telling. Overall a nice educational manga!

First, I would like to say thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for providing me with an e-ARC of this manga.

I was pleasantly surprised with this manga. I've actually never heard of Rakugo before reading this. But I feel like I've now learned more about the art of Rakugo. I also found myself chuckling and enjoying how cute the tanuki is. Overall, I really enjoyed this and can't wait to read the next volume!

My Master Has No Tail, Volume 1 by TNSK was a lighthearted manga about a tanuki who wants to learn the art of rakugo, a type of Japanese storytelling. It was okay, but a little confusing if you're not familiar with traditional Japanese stories. It would probably work better for me in an anime form where I could appreciate the sounds of rakugo as well as the words.

'My Master Has No Tail' is a really cute manga about a tanuki that wants to trick humans but is having trouble doing so. As she searches for a way to trick humans, she discovers rakugo and decides she wants to become a rakugo master. To do so, she has to convince the rakugo master Bunko that she would be a worthy apprentice.
This manga has a really cute premise that is matched by its fast paced storytelling. The art is both beautiful and cute, which matches with Mameda as the main character. The story does have some more serious elements that come up toward the end of this volume and that show a much deeper side to the story. This was a lot of fun and I can't wait to read more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for providing a review copy.

First and foremost I want to say I love the art here. The character designs and scenery are all really well done. I found this to be what most drew me in as I was reading.

The characters are also interesting, and I liked the relationship as it was developing between Mameda, the tanuki, and Bunko, the Rakugo storyteller. The master and student dynamic wasn't too stiff, and leads to plenty of humorous situations.

Unfortunately I know very little about Rakugo and I was definitely super lost through a lot of the first third to half of the volume. Towards the end of the book it definitely gets a bit easier to understand, but I still found myself wishing I knew more about it.

It took me longer than most manga volumes for me to finish reading, which made me realize I just couldn't fully get in to the material. I think this book will appeal to a niche reader in the west, and I personally don't see myself really continuing on with future volumes.

This manga follows a tanuki named Mameda who comes to the city from her small village and wants to trick humans - but finds it much e complicated than she expected! She soon gets swept up in the art of Rakugo, a form a storytelling, and wants to learn all she can about it.

This was a cute manga, and I really enjoyed the aspect of Rakugo - I definitely want to learn more about this type of storytelling in the future! I think this would be a little bit better if it delved into the characters a little more, but I had a fun time reading this and I think as the series continues there will be even more fun!

I liked that there were notes explaining the stories that got told, and I wanted to know even more about them.

This delightful manga follows a spunky tanuki who comes to the big city to trick humans-- only to find out the days of tanuki mischief are over, and she's left unable to fulfill her dreams until she discovers the art of rakugo. Hilarity ensues when she tries to convince Bunko, a master of rakugo, to take her on so she can learn to trick humans with words instead of tanuki illusions.

I absolutely adored this! The art style was fresh and cute, and I loved the relationship between Bunko and Mameda. This felt like a wonderful, funny homage to traditional Japanese storytelling and I'm really looking forward to seeing where this series is going! It was well-paced and I enjoyed the hijinks and themes. Can't wait to read volume 2!
