Don’t believe ppl telling you, you don’t need to read the Inheritance cycle first. You should. You will have a much better connection and understanding of the world, characters and references in this book. It’s literally a continuation.

If you enjoyed the Inheritance series, this book feels like reuniting with an old friend.

As a childhood Eragon fan, this was such a nostalgic read and it was so nice to be transported back to Alagaësia. This follows Murtagh and Thorn as they investigate a mysterious sorcerer and their amulets, but inevitably get more than they bargained for. While there is a slightly slow start that does feel a bit like context building, it lends itself well to create the intrigue around this sorcerer and builds on sympathies for Murtagh's tortured character. I especially enjoyed the insight into his point of view during the previous books, the creepiness of the main plot and of course his escapade with a giant fish. It felt like an opportunity for a lot of personal growth for Murtagh, which was quite emotional. This definitely feels like an opening to more development in the world of Eragon, and hopefully an exploration of his relationship with Nasuada.

I didn't realize how much I needed a Murtagh book until I read this. I'm so happy to be back in the world of Eragon and to see the aftermath of everything Murtagh went through. It was really interesting to see Murtagh's if/then use of magic, and I loved how different his and Thorn's relationship was in comparison to Eragon and Saphira's! It makes me wonder how Arya and her dragon are doing...

Now to wait impatiently for the next book!!

It was a wonderful stand-alone continuation of Paolini's Inheritance Cycle that focused on Murtagh and his dragon Thorn, and the hardships they faced following the downfall of Galbatorix and the Broddring Empire.

I loved this book so much. It's definitely a difficult read due to the nature of the material, focusing on trauma, healing, inner turmoil, failure, and depression, but Paolini does it so well. To witness it not only through Murtagh's perspective, but Thorn's as well, really helps us understand what they went through when they were under Galbatorix's control. I cried more times than I ever remember crying during a book but it was cathartic to experience those emotions through these beloved characters.
