This book! It somehow managed to be an extremely poignant commentary on misogyny and our culture's fetishization of violence against women, but also a true crime story about violence against women that I couldn't put down?! I think it's brilliant what this author has done with this genre. It also felt extremely nostalgic thinking about high school and college as a young woman. All of the excitement and giggling all while moving through a world that we didn't understand and baring the weight of womanhood while we were just girls. Ugh. So good.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this book where the narrator is addressing the possible killer directly throughout while telling the story of how events in the past and present unfolded. The story was a bit predictable but it took you on a wild ride before it got back to the obvious resolution, which was entertaining. The characters are loveable even though I’m not convinced they’re supposed to be. The plot was definitely believable as well.

Late Gen Xers and early Millennials will especially enjoy this story that weaves between the present and the mid-90’s. Beyond the main plot of exhuming a decades-old murder mystery is a meditation on power, adolescence, sexuality and collective memory. The use of an unconventional writing style to introduce us to one particular character enhances the mysteriousness of what has actually happened.
