There was a lot to like in this book but the central story simply was not as engaging as it needed to be. I thought the interrogation of the "true crime" genre was going to be more interesting. The big crime case in this book is cliché. I wish the author had a more unique angle, or a more unique story but it was pretty straight forward. A story we have all heard before.

Too much was going on. The book was overstuffed and could have benefited from a stronger edit. About a half dozen characters could have been omitted completely. And the book could have been cut down by 100-150 pages, easily. I know with a crime novel there is always a desire to build intrigue and have several plausible suspects. But there was just too much going on here. I got lost in this sprawling cast of characters.

I will also say that I found the reveal of the culprit and ending in general was unsatisfying.

I wanted to like this book- interesting premise and style. Just didn’t click for me and I couldn’t get lost into it.

This was Serial Season 1 meets a NH boarding school.  I have a complicated relationship with the true crime podcasts.  I used to listen to quite a few, but mostly avoid them now.  I was able to enjoy this story however because it was fictional.  I can definitely see why this one is popular!
