This was such an eye opening listen to the challenges a young Jennette faced as a child star, and one I had on my list for a while due to its high ratings. I was a bit put off by the title, but once I began listening, I found it’s quite fitting for the story told. I was especially impressed by her ability to recount just enough detail from her childhood to inform the reader, but not overwhelm, and how she places the audience almost in direct conversation with a young child. That is so hard to do well as an adult writer contextualizing and reflecting back! This then changes as the narrator ages and her word choice intentionally mirrors this timeline shift. My only critique would be the rushed ending in the book’s final chapters as she ages much more quickly (years and years) from scene to scene as opposed to the rest of the book’s gradual progression.

Overall, very smart and effective writing that kept me interested and rooting for Jennette to leave the industry from the start. I hope she continues writing because not only is she very talented, she wants to be putting these words on the page. It’s about time her voice, and hers alone, shines.

I listened to Jeanette in her audiobook and it was equal parts cathartic and heart breaking. This book is fascinating and raw and I am so grateful to her for writing it. Hearing her perspective shift throughout her life and see her gain strength and understanding was beautiful and inspiring and painful.

Wow. What an important book. The author's candor and perseverance are just so amazing. So much of her experience are things I could never relate to, but some are, and I'm grateful for her reflections and wisdom. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes memoirs. It's one of the best I've read.

This is as good as everyone says it is!
It’s honest, raw and emotional whim also being really funny. The audiobook performance by Jenette McCurdy is incredible, I felt like she was just telling me how it was for her, it didn’t feel like listening to a memoir.
I’d definitely recommend the audiobook but check trigger warnings before you read - Jenette had a hard start in life and didnt pull any punches sharing that in this book!

Wow! I’ve just finished this and I loved this book so much, I felt I could relate on so many levels!
Her mother had cancer from when Jennette was 2yo, she didn’t want to act but did for her mother. Her mother was abusive and a narcissist. She put a lot of pressure on Net and even pushed eating disorders to stunt her growth.. (something Jennette thought was in her favour and not something that was unsafe or wrong) which she still struggles with. Among other things Net’s life wasn’t what she wanted nor did she see a way out but to do it for her mother. She got help after her mother died through trial and error and is now doing well and what she loves and wanted to do all along.. writing. Im so glad she did because this book has opened my eyes and made me realise things I didn’t know before.
Sad, dark, tense, emotional, heartbreaking, thought provoking, inspiring, challenging and reflective. I applaud Jennette for sharing her truth!

Well written and deeply traumatic story.
However, the hilarity was NOT in the room with us. I don’t think there was a lot of humor in this book like the blurb says, but it was still a very good read.

Despite being a child star, I found Jennette’s story eerily relatable—from mommy issues to off-their-rocker Catholic boyfriends. Incredible. Thank you for sharing your story, Jennette.
