Not being a big Bridgerton show fan---I was hesitant to start this book. I also do not typically like romance. But I can say I very much enjoyed this story---probably more than the show. I might read another one in the series one day.

So I was absolutely loving everything about this book, I was so invested having watched and loved the series, and intrigued to see how it compared to the source material. Until the
scene where Daphne essentially sexually assaults Simon and it is then implied that it was HIS fault despite him being drunk (consent who?) and her being completely sober, going against his very directly stated wishes
. I was expecting it, having seen the show of course, however it was so much worse to read and very much dampened down in the series.

After that point, it left me with a sour taste in my mouth about the rest of the book and how everything seems to get so nicely resolved and no one really caring - in fact showing it in a positive light to ‘help the duke overcome his childhood trauma’ ??? Reverse the roles and tell me that would be brushed off as easily.

Unfortunately, I adored everything else about the book. Fabulous smut, great and witty characters with depth, and a wonderful throwback to the Netflix series. I will ultimately continue to read the other books despite my one (albeit large) criticism of this first book in the series, and hope there aren’t other similar issues going forwards.

A controversial 3.5 stars.

An enjoyable read, even having already seen the Netflix adaptation.

This is the very first time I've (finally !) read a Julia Quinn novel, can you believe it !
And I adored it ! So funny ! The scene between Daphne's mother and herself when she was explaining the marital duty ? I laughed out loud !
Absolutely entertaining !

Very predictable and boring. Will probably read the rest anyway.

There was one scene in this book in which I was absolutely disgusted by the betrayal of trust daphne showed towards Simon. I just don’t understand how she could so blatantly go against his wishes (it truly is beyond me and infuriated me FULLY) I also think the act was very much swept under the rug and Daphne was not properly reprimanded for the way she took advantage of Simon.

That being said I did enjoy other parts of this book. The first half of it was lovely w lots of good historical romance trademark scenes I adored. I also thought the book did a fab job of describing the Bridgerton family (they are so charming and I am especially intrigued by the brothers... I have my eye on Colin at the moment

Better than the show. The only parts the show does better are the inclusion of Queen Charlotte, more focus on Lady Whistledown, and making an attempt at diversity. Daphne is not one dimensional in the book, and is actually quite a good character, something that gets lost in the show. The Duke is of course still ridiculous, but he gets over it much more quickly here. I wasn’t initially going to read these books because the show is meh, but I think I’ll keep going, at least with the next one.
