I’m all about neurodivergent characters, especially ones as sweet as Molly. I loved rooting for her and watching her find a chosen family.

However, I wish the author would have researched the legal side of things—I’m begging you, authors, please do more than watch Suits and Boston Legal if you’re going to include legal scenes in your books.

Four stars because I’m obsessed with Molly and her growth.

Okay. Well. This was certainly a book. (Spoilers ahead)

I have to say that sometimes, a plot twist literally coming from nowhere feels like lazy writing. THREE plot twists coming from nowhere within 50 pages italic text: really feels like lazy writing. Unfortunately, The Maid fell head first into that. I'll try to start from the beginning.

Molly is a maid at a elite hotel. She knows everything from her Gran, who passed away before the start of the novel. When she finds the body of one of the hotel's wealthiest patrons, she's tossed into this murder mystery without the help of her greatest supporter.

Molly is written heavily neurodivergent coded. She is most likely autistic, but absolutely nobody, not even the author, wants to admit this. She's naïve, particular, and checks a list of autistic stereotypes; everybody except maybe three people take advantage of her, treat her like an idiot and bully her. It's very upsetting and uncomfortable. There's also Juan Manuel, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who is also treated as naïve, mildly unintelligent, and checks a list of stereotypes. Reading their characters were just... weird vibes. It didn't feel right
Spoiler They also got saved by a bunch of white, privileged people but whatever, we have Rodney as a white asshole from a wealthy family to even it out, right?

The plot was meh, it did not hold my attention well. I mostly marched through because the whole thing feels like a hate crime, or at least a 300+ page microagression, and I'm genuinely baffled how the hell it was written.

Then there were three plot twists revealed in quick succession. Two of which destroy the character of Molly because they contradict everything we've learned of her till the point they are revealed. 1) spoilers:
Spoiler The charming doorman at the hotel who helps Molly is actually her grandfather! This is told through his own words, but he phrases it vague enough that Molly doesn't understand. This never comes back. I have no idea why this was included.
2)
Spoiler Molly actually killed her grandmother. Not out of maliciousness, no! Gran wanted to go on her own terms and not from cancer. She told Molly to drug her and smother her with a pillow. This is WILDLY out of character for Molly. The chapter feels like it was added in as a random twist because it also has no reason to be included except for the FINAL twist.
3)
SpoilerMolly actually knew who killed Mr. Black all along. Molly is repeatedly shown to be unable to keep a secret, but somehow she manages to keep this to herself because she "understood" the murderer's reason since she killed her grandmother.

It was an easy read, I'll give it that, but it was not worth it. When I finished it at 1am with my little booklight on, I said aloud to no one: "well, that was stupid."
