Very encouraging and loving approach to empowering women to get what they want out of their birth and postpartum. Would recommend.

This book was okay. I wish I had picked a different one to read during my pregnancy because there’s no real information about birth provided. The entire book is basically, “you can do it”, “I love you”, “don’t have fear.” I’m not the kind of person that needs to hear these things or be told that I must advocate for myself – I already advocate for myself. If you’re someone that struggles to speak up for yourself in regards to your health and provider’s choices then it may be a good book for you. The only beneficial knowledge I gained from this book was from the birth plans. Other than that, it does not make me feel any more prepared to give birth than I did before I read it.
I can tell January is such a sweet person and this book is wonderful if you need the encouragement or don’t have the best support system. I got a little bored and bf the end just wanted it to be over. It wasn’t very much practical information and was a lot more of “you can do this” happy fluff.
Currently studying to be a midwife and thought this year I’m going to read as much as possible on the topic of childbirth from a mum and healthcare work’s perspective.
So glad I started here. This book was the perfect place to start so I can now go forth and better educate the mothers I work with on how they have the final say in their child’s birth.
Definitely recommend to any soon to be mums or midwives. Let’s be honest all women should read it.
“Holding Space” is what I will base my career on.

While I wanted with all of my heart to thoroughly enjoy this book, unfortunately, I only like about 1/3 of it. I didn’t like how miscarriage was basically a short fragment of the book and it felt rushed through. The section on preparation the third trimester seemed to have a negative spin to me. I did, however, love her postpartum section, all of the self-love she recommended, and the first few chapters. While I wouldn’t recommend this book to everyone, I do know a few people who I would recommend it to.
