NYSPD Lieutenant Eve Dallas & partner, Detective Delia Peabody take on a case when philanthropist & medical genius, Wilfred B. Icove is murdered in his office. Viewing the security footage of a cool, calm, killer makes Dallas think it may have been a paid for hit, however, when his son is also murdered, they begin to investigate the Icoves' background. They start to find worrying evidence that the good doctors may have been involved in a scheme to create physically & mentally perfect young girls through gene manipulation & plastic surgery, to become wives, licenced companions, & any other number of things, to be bought by the highest bidder when they become adults.

As we reach the 21st book in the series - it shows no signs of flagging. The books are set in the second half of the twenty-first century, & in this one the author tackles the subject of gene manipulation, longevity, & cloning. It's a fascinating subject & one that is explained in just enough detail that it didn't detract from the overall story line. There were also some lighter moments of banter between Dallas & Peabody, & involving Roarke's Irish extended family coming over to visit for Thanksgiving.
