Some lines of beautiful poetry from Shakespeare, but overall it was too long, we spent way too much time focusing on the perspective of a disgusting rapist and not long enough on poor Lucrece herself, and of course the ending is absolutely not the message to send to victims. I also think it should have ended when she died, rather than losing all the emotion that had built to a climax at the peak of Lucrece's grief by reverting to the perspective of her father and husband - get the men out of this bloody narrative, this is Lucrece's story. I will say, though, that I thought some of the references to Ovid (classic Shakespeare) were clever, especially the Philomela bit.

Never read a non-sonnet Shakespeare poem, and wasn't entirely sure what to expect. The poem is obviously a little inaccessible to the modern day reader, but the grievous plot line is rendered tastefully in Shakespeare's classically beautiful style. A really interesting and challenging read.
