Meh

Interesting world building. Plot was pretty basic and the surprise twists were so generic and predictable. I kept thinking, "have I read this book before?" The cat was my favorite character and showed the most potential for good character development. Jax was a selfishly immature fool who I couldn't find an inkling of respect for. He and his almost murderer became chummy weirdly quick at one point. Rowyn does some stupidly rash things and you have to wonder how's she's survived this long.

If you're bored and looking for a formulaic book with no real emotional investment, this might be a good choice.

Nope.

This series just pushed way too many of my most hated tropes.

TSTL heroine with a martyr complex? Check.

Complete dickhead lead male character? Check.

Mean girls? Check.

Oh no, the Council of Good Guys is actually filled with smug, pretentious, know-it-all assholes who don't give a flying fuck about anyone else? CHECK.

A plot that takes flying leaps of illogic? Checkity check.

No thanks.

It was ok, but ended up skimming towards the end as it got more and more ridiculous and not in a good way. I also saw the big reveal of the baddie a mile away.

Shadow and light

I really enjoyed this urban fantasy, it has just the right amount of action, magic and adventure. On marking it a 4, instead of a 5 however, due to the similarities with the new series set in the same world. This one is older, and I might not have even noticed, except I read the other one just yesterday. Same author, so it’s ok, but struck me as formulaic. Regardless, it’s still entertaining and opens a new universe I am excited to explore.

Pros:
- New universe (new to me)
- Great characters.
- Characters have human foibles, which is perfect in a world of magic.
- Things are answered, but nothing is solved.

Cons:
- I figured out what she was very early on.... subtitle. If it was really a mystery, that should have been changed.

This is the first book in what could have been a great series.
The first book is fantastic but somewhere along the way, the story got lost and it became a game of the author hates the world, the author against the world, no one else matters and everyone else is traitors or red-shirts.
I do not recommend reading anything after this first book because there is no character development. The characters, including Rowynn are flat and barely 2 dimensional.
And then, just as we might start caring about supporting characters, they die or they do something completely out of character.

*Sigh* I'm on a DNF spree apparently :(

The premise is solid, seems like your average paranormal urban fantasy w a romance sub plot type of deal. The problem is that the characters don'tttttt really behave like normal people. Like. Idk. They're odd. The FMC trauma dumps to strangers constantly, and the MMC's personality as a whole just confuses me. They're both super flawed as a result of their own traumas, which is normally good, but they just don't behave in ways that make sense (and not in like a "subconscious trauma response" way, but in a "what is going on" way).

The FMC's actions are pretty hypocritical too, like she hates the council but will work for them for money (okay, she's broke, this is fine), BUT then she goes on this hugeee rant about how she works alone and refuses to work with a partner but then absolutely relies on him constantly and gets mad when he expects her to deal with shit on her own. Like girl make up your mind! The second she agreed to partner up, she suddenly loses all of her independence?? Plus, him leaving her behind "on accident" like I'm sorry that quite literally is the opposite of his trauma response, as we later saw in the vamp lair. How did that make sense. Those two situations were totally at odds.

Yeah idk overall just not for me. Kind of reads like middle grade fanfic but with better grammar.

Plot and story are interesting. The writing is a bit juvenile, the main character read more like an enamored middle school girl than an 18yr old demon hunter.

Angel-born or humans with angel essence seek out and destroy evil creatures such as demons. Almost all have a sigil that indicates which archangel they trace back to. Rowyn Sinclair is different and doesn't report to the counsil who oversees the angel-born she has been rogue ever since she accused the council with being involved in the murder of her parents.
