Lovely foreshadowing, some passages were long but the prose was so nice I didn't mind at all. I think the movie edited everything down very well. I enjoyed both versions

What a story! "Fingersmith" is a Dickensonian romp through merry 'ole England replete with dodgers, thieves, lunatics, murderers, swindlers, child marketers, charlatans, and orphans. There are more twists and turns in this page-turner than you will find on a corkscrew. It has been a long time since I was so captivated by a mystery.

Waters's prose is captivating as well. Her detailed descriptions and character development are amazing.

I will definitely read more books by this author.

A twisty plot with two strong narrative voices (especially Sue's) and vivid characters and settings. I thought
Spoiler the last section, especially Sue's time in the asylum, was a little too drawn-out, but I really liked the final scene.

I heard that Sarah Waters was an excellent mystery write (and she is), but I didn't expect the romance story so that was a little surprising. At first it seemed like the story was going to be less of a mystery story and more just grounds for a Victorian, lesbian romance, but about halfway through the book the story actually takes off on its own. A pretty good read. I didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to have but it was defnitely worth my time.

i picked up this book because it inspired one of my favorite movies, the handmaiden, so i had pretty high expectations going in. i was a little nervous, though, because oftentimes i don't enjoy books as much when i read them after watching the movie because i feel like i already know the story.
the first half of fingersmith was very similar to the first half of the handmaiden, but i was still able to really enjoy the story. i enjoyed the victorian setting, the romance, and the internal conflicts of the characters. while i was expecting the twist at the end of part one, so it didn't shock me the way it would have if i hadn't seen the movie, i still really enjoyed the way part two reshapes the reader's views of part one.
at the end of part two, the book goes in a really different direction than the movie, which gave it a sense of suspense and curiosity i didn't feel earlier on when i knew what was going to happen. i think if i'd read the book first i would have been able to appreciate this part of the story more, but i liked the direction the handmaiden took much more which left me kind of disappointed with the book when it told a very different story and didn't include some of my favorite scenes from the movie.
i'm definitely still glad i read this and i think it tells a good story on its own, but i didn't love it the way i loved the handmaiden.
