As I continue my exploration of Steinbeck, I find myself left with mixed emotions. A book such as Tortilla Flat became a favourite, while others like The Wayward Bus can't be with equal acclaim. This novel was compelling at the outset with the introduction of its various characters. However, as the story progressed, I lost my engagement to it, and everything became too "mushy" for my liking. I understand the praise this book has been given, but I believe Steinbeck has written far greater stories.

This book was like an old movie running in my head. A group of travelers in a bus on the back roads of California deal with their hopes, desires, and disappointments. Great character building. A little depressing. Good stuff.
