The audiobook was excellent. I’m not sure how I feel about it reading it, but based on the quality of the audiobook alone I’ll give it four stars. I was astonished by how much character the narrator was able to provide the protagonists through inflection alone.
This was my first honest-to-god mystery I’ve read in a while. While it was certainly dark, I found it quite enjoyable. I wish i saw more of Ramsey and Tate. Hopefully we’ll get that in the next book.

Isn't there a saying along the lines of 'not judging a book by its' cover'?
Well, I was attracted to this book because of its cover. I've had a reading excursion of late from historical fiction, to gothic fiction, to historical mysteries...and [b:The Highgate Cemetery Murder|202712672|The Highgate Cemetery Murder (Tate and Bell Mystery, #1)|Irina Shapiro|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1701001984l/202712672._SY75_.jpg|208235455] falls into the later category.
This is a book that does what it says on the tin (the tin being the cover and the title) It's a comfortable sofa of a book, a holiday read, which is engaging enough to want to read on but without being hugely challenging.
We are introduced to the two main characters - Gemma Tate - a nurse recently returned from the Crimean war, and Sebastian Bell - a police inspector recovering from a recent tragic bereavement. Both characters were interesting and felt like 'modern-thinking' individuals in a 19th century world - but it worked to highlight the challenges they faced such as bigotry, misogyny, and other words that are difficult to spell.
The story had an interesting turn of events at the end (I won't call it a twist as it wasn't sudden enough for that). A standalone story, it had certain elements of feeling like a setup for series. I guess the acid test of how successful this was, is if I will read book two straight away.
The answer is - I have downloaded it ...but I'm going to read something else first.

While a fine read I didn't find it compelling enough to add to my list of active series. The characters have back stories to be fleshed out in later entries and the setting is the Victorian London I am familiar with in other books. If I were short of reading material I would continue but my TBR is very long.

A solid mystery! Not necessarily a cozy read, the book deals with a lot of dark topics. But I found myself really enjoying the characters and their stories. I love a good side romance so I’m kind of rooting for Gemma and Inspector Bell

The narrator for this put absolutely everything into the telling and I loved it. I'll listen to more books she's read just to enjoy her delivery.
