I had to read Tschick for my Abitur, and honestly, I was quite disappointed with the book. The story felt very constructed, like it was trying too hard to be cool and relatable for young readers, but it didn’t come across as authentic. The use of youth slang seemed forced and unnatural, which made it difficult to connect with the characters or the dialogue. Speaking of the characters, they felt very flat and one-dimensional. There wasn’t much depth or development, so I didn’t really care about what happened to them.
The plot itself seemed slow and uneventful — it felt like almost nothing really happens throughout the story, which made it hard to stay interested. I was expecting a more engaging and meaningful journey, but instead, it just dragged on without much payoff. The writing style was very simple, to the point that it often felt dull rather than refreshing or clever.
I don’t understand why Tschick is so celebrated. From my point of view, there are no clear reasons to praise it objectively. The story lacks real depth, and the characters don’t show any meaningful growth or complexity. The forced youth language makes the dialogue feel unnatural. There’s no strong message or theme that stands out, and the plot offers little excitement or development.
Overall, I find it hard to see what makes Tschick deserving of the praise it gets. I have the feeling that reading this book stole time from me — time I could have better invested in other works that are more meaningful or engaging.
