Lots and lots of angst here people!!! Skylar went through hell and back Which is the only reason I dropped a star. It seemed a little over the top. And because she refused to be honest with Mitch about anything. Somewhere along this journey Skylar got lost, but I loved the ending. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

Very good, emotional read, especially when skylar went thought having a bad time in her early years. Shame I had to wait to the end for them to get back together.

My Skylar by Penelope Ward is a standalone novel, but those that have read Jake Undone will recognize Skylar and Mitch. After reading Jake Undone, I couldn't wait to get to know these characters better, but don't worry if you haven't read Jake's story as you don't need to in order to understand anything. I thought that both Casey Jones and Piper Goodeve did a great job narrating this story, and I enjoyed listening to them as Skylar and Mitch's story unfolded.

Skylar and Mitch were best friends who both secretly loved one another, but one thing after another kept them apart. First Skylar had cancer and then Mitch did something that caused Skylar to leave. Years go by, but now that Skylar is back Mitch is more determined than ever to make Skylar his again. Though Skylar is back, she is with someone. But Mitch knows that Skylar isn't happy and that she is about to make a huge mistake. Mitch vows to do whatever it takes to make sure that he doesn't lose her forever.

I loved Skylar and Mitch. Their love and connection was so strong, and it was obvious that they belonged together. They both made a ton of mistakes, one of the biggest being the fact that they never communicated well. There were so many things that could have been prevented had they just talked to one another and been honest about their feelings. A lot of that was age though, and it was hard to blame them for some of that since we all do questionable things in our youth. The one thing that I can say with absolute certainty though is that the love these two felt for one another was undeniable and never dimmed or diminished no matter what they went through. There were so many obstacles that they faced and so many things that happened, but they never stopped loving each other through all the hurt and time apart. The chemistry between them was there from their very first meeting, and it just grew with age and the more time they spent together. I absolutely loved them together and couldn't get enough of their relationship.

Overall, I loved this story even when it was difficult to get through. There were times that my heart felt like it was literally breaking for these two. While I did love so much of this story, there was one thing that I didn't care for. I hated that this story went there, and it felt a bit unnecessary and cliche. After everything that these two had already been through, I was hoping for them to finally get a break, and while the story did recover it wasn't exactly what I had been hoping for for these two. Suffice it to say I wanted to reach through my Kindle and strangle a character, and I could have easily done without said character. I still think that Skylar and Mitch's story is well worth the read, their love is epic and what we all dream of finding. Skylar and Mitch will definitely stick with me, and I think that these narrators did a great job of bringing the story to life and giving it depth that isn't possible by just reading the story alone. I highly recommend this one and I can't wait to read more from Penelope Ward. Her stories are heartfelt and emotional, and while they are hard at times to get through, I have never been disappointed by her yet.

This was fairly mediocre when it comes to creativity and execution. The storyline wasn’t heart stopping or even realistic — it felt like the obstacles the characters faced were too intentionally crafted and not truly organic. The connection to the characters also wasn’t really there.

My Skylar, by the amazingly talented Penelope Ward, was absolute perfection. There are two other books that go with this one, Gemini, and Jake Undone, but this can be read as a stand-alone (I don’t recommend this, read them both!). The main characters, Mitch and Skylar, go through about every possible thing you can imagine during their long and difficult relationship, including cancer (and contrary to what I expected, this is not another Fault in Our Stars type sad story), unplanned pregnancy, and crazy broads. In the book that came before this, you meet a very interesting Skylar during her time in the hospital when she has cancer. This book takes you to the before and after from that time. This novel also goes into the time she had cancer, but doesn’t spend too long on it.

This book is above and beyond a five, but that is my highest rating, and there wasn’t a second thought or a doubt in giving it. This book was touching, and heartfelt, and beautiful, and sad, and happy, and real (and real dirty at some parts). It encompassed so many different things over a great deal of time for the two main characters. The author did an amazing job showing a relationship that was beyond difficult, that should have been impossible, but somehow love won out. It was truly beautiful. I was so excited to finally get around to reading this one that I didn’t reread the first two like I wanted. I highly, highly suggest you read those two as well. They are every bit as much as wonderful as this book was.

Hey, future reader. First thing you should know before reading this book, is that I regretted reading it myself.

WARNING:

-Unnecessary angst.

-Stupid... I mean, STUPID heroine. Her name is Skylar.

-The only character you will like will be the "villain," Charisma. She's the only person in the whole book that was a redeeming factor. She went after what she wanted and she most importantly didn't LIE to herself.

-Indecisive heroine who went and lost her virginity to a stranger because she claimed that giving it up was like giving up something that somebody ELSE owns...when we all know no one owns our virginities BUT OURSELVES!

-She lies to the hero because she claims it was the best for him...?

-Heroine didn't have the decency to break up with her boring and sexist fiancé before she slept with the hero. So she decides to cheat on the fiancé even though she spent a whole amount of this book worrying about the hero cheating on HER! So she must how know it feels to be cheated on or to worry about it but she went and did it to someone else.

-not enough sex scenes to redeem this book and the only TWO, maybe three...(I don't remember) sex scenes in there weren't even hot or memorable enough to make this book better.

I regret reading this thing. And it was the first book I've read from this author...I think.

DON'T read it!

If you decide to, don't say I didn't warn you.

You'll want to punch a heroine so hard in the face. No need for that anger in your life.

Ugh, I think it's getting to the point where I can determine my book rating by the number of times I either laugh my butt off, or conversely, ugly-cry my face off. This book had a few laugh-my-face-off moments, but mostly it was copious ugly-crying episodes. The story was beautiful, Skylar was memorable and Mitch was unforgettable. His stalking was a bit creeperish, but given their history, understandable. The ending with Kevin was a bit unpolished and could have been transitioned more thoughtfully, but I get that not much time was wanting to be spent on him. A great read overall; keep the tissues handy.
