Written in Blood is the eleventh book in the series that follows the investigations of Robert Hunter, a detective in the LAPD's Ultra Violent Crimes Unit. In this edition to the series, Angela Wood, a skilled pickpocket, accidentally uncovers a violent journal during one of her night escapades. When realising exactly what it is, she slips it in the letterbox of Dr Susan Slater - forensic scientist, who brings it to the attention of Detective Hunter and his partner Garcia. After the discovery of a body from the journal proves it as no hoax, they are on a race against time to catch this sadistic, yet intelligent killer before he kills someone else. Carter's writing is fast paced and precise, which propels the story forward and keeps the reader engaged throughout. The plot is cleverly constructed, with several unexpected twists and turns. This book is not for the faint of heart. It does a deep dive into some disturbing and graphic material making it possible to be triggering for some readers. Otherwise, it's a must-read for fans of Crime/Thriller genre.

Really enjoyed this novel about a serial killer that operates on a different level than what you would expect. The writing is good, the chapters short enough to keep the pace up and the reader attached to the page. [full review to follow]

Whenever I read a Chris Carter book, I always wonder how he’s going to be able to top the previous book in the series. But somehow he always does! And this one is no exception. Brutal, heart pounding and full of everything I’ve come to love about his Robert Hunter series, I was instantly drawn back into the world of serial killers and mayhem and, I must say, enjoyed every single blood soaked word of it!
This time Robert Hunter finds himself on the hunt for a serial killer after receiving a call from a colleague who has just taken delivery of a mysterious journal. But this isn’t just any old journal, this is a journal that’s full of the secrets of a depraved mind. And Robert, once again, finds himself in a race against time to uncover the identity of a serial killer before even more people die. This is a killer who will stop at nothing to get back what is rightfully his. And Robert Hunter will do everything in his power to catch him before he strikes again.
Chris Carter’s past experience as a member of the Michigan State District Attorney’s Criminal Psychology team stands him in good stead once again as he, or rather Robert Hunter, delves deep inside the mind of a serial killer. Can Hunter and his trusted partner Garcia solve the hidden clues within the journal before it’s too late?
Written in Blood is a fantastic addition to the series, keeping me on my toes from beginning to end. The tension ratchets up to breaking point as Hunter and Garcia get closer and closer to the truth, leading to a heart stopping conclusion that had me breathless and on the edge of my seat right up until the final page had been turned. Although part of a series, this instalment would read very well as a standalone and is a great introduction to the series that I’m sure will leave you gasping for more!
Chris Carter is a genius when it comes to writing about serial killers, his knowledge of criminal behaviour second to none. His writing draws you in from the outset, with a dark and disturbing storyline that is guaranteed to set your pulse racing. With twists, turns and surprises that will keep you turning the pages, Written in Blood is an outstanding book that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

I am a huge Chris Carter fan, but this last story just seemed to miss something. Don't get me wrong, it is good, but just not up to the standards I have come to expect from Chris' books.
Perhaps I shouldn't be too harsh, considering the terrible loss he suffered recently. It must have been really hard to pen a book whilst enduring such pain.
So, what was missing for me? I cannot quite put finger on it. Perhaps I just did not find the killer convincing, or was it the lack of pace. Carlos' character also seemed to have become a bit puny.
Not wanting to give away any spoilers, but the lead female character was rather annoying. I found myself at one stage wishing that she would.... let's leave it at that. For someone so supposedly smart, most of her actions were damn stupid. This led me to feel that the book was not as polished as some of previous ones in the series. It felt like a rush job.
While definitely the least enjoyable book in the series so far, it still isn't too bad. Hopefully Chris is already busy writing the next novel as he is still one of my favourite authors along with Tom Clancy.
