An amazing read. I loved the yiddish, the unapologetically jewish-ness of the book, the resilience of the characters, how it deals with queerness.
This book is a must read. It’s dark, direct when it comes to antisemetism but doesn’t make jews helpless victims.
It’s raw and delicate at the same time and while pretty violent and sad it also sparks hope.

Content warnings:
Sexual Assault , CSA and rape. Antisemitism, murder, homophobia, torture/gore, descriptions of corpses and PTSD-like flashbacks. Descriptions of poverty and classism associated. Bereavement and grief. Animal cruelty and descriptions of the meat industry. Mentions of suicide and self harm. I may be missing a few, but these are the main ones I can remember.
I’ve always been curious about Jewish culture, despite studying Philosophy, religion and ethics, the curriculum never touched upon anything other than the basics that separated Christianity and Judaism. So, it was very interesting to learn new things that for some reason were absent.
This Yakov’s, Frankie’s and Alter’s stories were genuinely so heartbreaking, they seemed so human. So flawed, but with good hearts. Sometimes characters feel like husks, or concepts, but if you’d told me these people were based on actual people- I would believe you. I imagine over the years, there have been people who have lived similar lives, which makes it all the more heartbreaking.
Raizel was very intriguing, I’d like to learn more about her and learn her story. I like that she’s opinionated.
I look forward to reading more from this author.

This has a really slow start but once it did, the plot is really engaging. I do wish that it didn't take about 40% for the mystery to really start. I also think that some parts have a much slower pace than the other and those parts are a bit hard to get through. Overall, a really good mystery thriller book
