The scary parts of this book are SCARY.
Serial murders. A foundational awareness of rape and sexual abuse in the underbelly of the world of the book - which is our world. Violence. So much violence. But none of it is frivolous. None of it is for shock value. All of it is essential to the story.
I say that as someone who does not read violent books. Murder mysteries are not my jam.
But this book.
Mesmerizing. The story is so so so good.
The characters are fully fleshed out human beings.
The twists and turns are captivating.
The fully Jewish world of the book is rich and textured and whole.
And terrifying.
10/10 recommend.

I'm not really sure how to rate this. While I found the story and characters interesting and likable, it was very slow paced and I struggled to stay engaged. I found the Jewish culture fascinating, but I had to look up many words, which may have been part of the trouble with staying engaged. It's a very tragic story with a somewhat triumphant ending. Maybe a better read during the cold and dreary days of winter instead of a summer read.

This book was really entertaining once you get past the first few "I'm not like other girls" first chapters. Avoid the audiobook if you can. Some other reviewers mentioned this and I tried it anyways; then I switched to just reading it regularly. Much better experience.
