4.5 ⭐️ fun. good. fast-paced and suspenseful. got me out of a reading slump. gossip girl vibes. the characters were relatable and well fleshed out and had solid character development arcs so it was super fun to follow their stories. the grand reveal was a tiny bit underwhelming but i liked the way it all slowly unraveled and wrapped up in a very satisfying way.

i really enjoyed this book! another i decided to read in october for halloween season

the story follows 4 students who end up in detention with one of their classmates, simon. simon is not very well liked in their school because he runs a gossip blog where he posts the secrets and scandals of his peers.

the 4 students are in detention with simon when he suddenly collapses on the floor and dies. through investigating his death, police find out that simon died of anaphylaxis due to someone putting peanut oil in the cup of water he drank from. the entire book follows each of the 4 students povs as they are investigated as persons of interest in the murder.

the book was very good, but i could’ve done with a different ending. the person who ended up being responsible did not give me what i wanted to get out of this book. the book is obviously titled “one of us is lying” and the cover showcases those 4 students in detention with simon who were investigated the entire time. when the killer ended up being someone who wasn’t even in that group, i felt mislead and cheated. i thought that one of them would end up being the culprit and was disappointed when the ending i expected from the cover and title was not given to me.

4/5 read for me, and maybe i’ll even read the sequel!

It was really good, even though I totally called the ending. Through sheer brute force and multiple guesses, but I still got it. It was a tad bit of a slow start, but when it picked up it had me on the edge of my seat. The different point of views made the pacing made the exciting bits excruciating, which was enjoyable and agonizing. It's not my favorite YA mystery novel, but it was good and I would recommend it.
