Overall I am very conflicted by this book.
I finished it because I wanted to know what happened, and the ending somewhat surprised me.
But I also had a lot of very baseline issues with how it was written, first and foremost being SUPER problematic character details that weren't ever really addressed in any way that tried to break down stereotypes. It just perpetuated them.
I really hated something Nate said early on, about hating that kind of girl who's vapid and only cares about this weeks power play with her other vapid girlfriends. Come on Nate. Even though he grew as a person, why was the opportunity never taken to comment on how maybe you shouldn't blindly subscribe to the whole "girls are mean and catty" bs?
And the thing that made me the most upset - when Addie (forgive me if I spell names wrong, I listened to this book so I never saw them written) mentions the first time she got birth control, her mom took her and made the comment, "remember, if you say no enough times, eventually someone else will say yes."
EXCUSE ME? I'm sorry, but even though she definitely was characterized as a "mean mom", this is utter bullshit. No one should ever say this to a young woman. Or to anyone! And the book, again, never makes sure readers KNOW this is a fat steaming pile of garbage thing to say to someone. You can't make assumptions like that with teenagers. You just can't.
It's just plain irresponsible for an author to include a line like that so casually, and then not make "your body is your own and no one should tell you what to do with it" a theme of the book.
Ffs.
It's disappointing too, because this book had some other semi redeeming qualities, but little stuff like this kept turning me off. I wanted to love the mystery. I wanted to enjoying watching these four kids thrown together in a mess that becomes a nation wide scandal.
But I also feel a little weird about books coming out about things related to school shootings and the like. It feels too soon, tbh. And I don't know about the printed book, but the audiobook definitely didn't mention any resources for people who might not know where to go to talk about this sort of thing.
I just wanted it to be a little bit better, a little more thoughtful.

This book is like if the breakfast club was a mystery.

Couldn't put it down. Came for the mystery/thriller, stayed for the teen romance. #BrowynNate4ever

The twist was crazy but it had already been spoiled for me so it didn't have the same surprise.
Some things I guessed VERY easily and quickly:
- Brooklyn and Nate having a romance
- Cooper being gay
- Addy breaking up with Jake
But overall still a fun read.

One of Us is Lying has been on my TBR since it first released last year. I've heard so many wonderful things about it and One of Us is Lying lived up to all of my expectations! It's advertised as a mix between Breakfast Club and Pretty Little Liars, which is exactly how I would describe it myself. I was constantly trying to guess who was behind the murder and I was continually surprised by the twists and turns. Some of the revelations were bigger than others, but all were perfectly weaved into the story.

Really fun for what it is! A good fast paced read, although I'm a little disappointed in the ending because it felt a little rushed.
I have my daughter to thank for this: I would never have picked it up had she not lent it to me and told me I’d enjoy it.
She was right. I did.
