Oh, what a treat EMPRESS AND ANIYA is — a true testament to the sense of home that can grow between friends. I want to see it as a Disney Channel original movie (à la FREAKY FRIDAY) because it has all the components to succeed: it warms the heart & involves magic & touches on family and growing up. Giving it 3.5 stars only because it deserves to be twice as long!

This was a well written novel, and I believe that is quite hard to do. This is a modern take on Freaky Friday which I enjoyed. The novella covers some difficult subjects including poverty, classism, racism and privilege. The story was touching of how Aniya and Empress become friends, and the importance and complexity of friendship. I feel that the novella would have been even better if it was written for a slightly older audience, as this does read on the younger side of YA, because the subject matters covered in the book could of been explored more, and not have remained surface level. I do however, feel that this is one of the best novella's I've read, and I hope to read more of Candice's work in the future.
