As much as I like Tintin, this one was tough. It was written in the 1930s with a traditional Belgian view of the time on colonialism. In today's context, it feels severly outdated. It basically depicts the Congolese population as stupid, and shows it as achievements to blow up a rhino with dynamite or kill an ape to use its skin as disguise.

It's a good album, not the best at all. Of course we can talk about the obvious problem of this album, racism. But I think we need to remember that it was written decades before our age, of course it would be unacceptable if someone wrote that today, but it was acceptable when Hergé wrote it. To sum up, not my favorite but not a bad one

the art is better than the last tin tin adventure, however everything else is much worse. instead of each vignette involving some sort of fisticuffs -- which, although juvenile is at least entertaining -- this one is just boring. i can get what Herge was trying to do, replacing all the fighting and adventuring with adventuring. however, this version of adventuring mainly involves running around and shooting animals and then treating the Congolese like some caricature of a jungle savage who worship the very ground every white tourist walks on. there is some semblance of a plot where it's revealed (in some very out-of-place full exposition panels) that Al Capone is masterminding the assassination attempts on tintin, however it all gets wrapped up almost instantly and then followed by more pointless animal killing (maybe it was seen as really cool back then?) and then ends abruptly.

this one is out of print for good reason.
