Part 1 was really good but the idea was better than the execution. Idk why but this felt not fully developed.

I really liked the setting and the writing style. Adelaide was a great character to follow and I was rooting for her the whole time. Some of the side characters weren't as well developed, but I did really like Grace and Sam. I didn't love how the middle of the book focused entirely on side characters instead of following Adelaide. I also thought the ending happened a bit too fast especially considering the slow pace of the beginning, which I preferred. I overall liked the ending, but I wish there was more closure on some characters (Joan, Sam, the rest of the town) and less closure on Adelaide and co/the ending was a bit more ambiguous or didn't go forward in time as much as it did. I liked this a lot more than The Ballad of Black Tom so I'll definitely read more from Victor LaValle because I liked the style of this.

Maybe it was the genre not being my go to….Maybe I didn’t understand how the horror elements were supposed to be scary…Maybe I didn’t connect to any of the characters….Maybe the pacing was too slow for my taste…But I’m surprised this novel didn’t put me in a reading slump.

Too many characters and you don't get any connection with any of them. The book is all aboutabout the interaction of the main character with them, but it felt like it had no plot. The story was unfocused, going to nowhere, it felt like the author was writing the book as it came without any vision. The motives of the characters were never explained and there were no character development.
I like the representation and the historical setting.

I will say that I read this in about a day and a half but I’m not really sure that I enjoyed it. I definitely enjoyed the mystery initially but it didn’t really resolve that well and there were a few plot holes that never really got filled in.

Yet another highly overrated entry from GoodReads reviews. For those of you who were interested in the prospect of a Western frontier horror, look elsewhere. At best, this is historical fiction with a splash of supernatural mystery—and not a great mystery at that.

I thought this book was very interesting and unexpected. I really enjoyed the characters but felt a bit slow paced for me.
