i didn’t expect to like the historical aspect of this one, but the early 1900s are such a fascinating time period and a very fitting backdrop for some middle-of-nowhere murders and other assorted crimes. 

i loved the diversity of the characters in gender, sexuality, and race—and even though it was unrealistic in some ways, victor lavalle did it in such a way that i wasn’t taken out of the story… in fact, it made it so much better. 

overall this was a good read (but very slow and at times a tad confusing, in my opinion) with a cool premise and interesting characters.

Frustratingly, I found this to be not my taste, despite a really incredible premise. Mostly, I felt that scenes were cut just went I was beginning to become invested in them, which while adding to the dramatic and desolate effect, kept me from connecting with either the plot or the characters.
