I absolutely loved this book. I did not think I would enjoy a western historical fiction but boy was I wrong. The way the author slowly unfolds the secrets of both Adelaide and the trunk she carries was masterful. Each character had depth and the secrets they carried were complex and unpredictable. The plot was delicious and he even opened my eyes to the black women who went to tame the frontier. This book is a historical fiction, fantasy, and horror rolled all into one. This did not disappoint!

I really liked this!

Ominous build-up, creature horror, found family, realistic portrayals of racial dynamics on the “frontier”, heartwarming ending; the author put it all in here without it feeling too jumbled or heavy.

will definitely be reading more by this author; the prose was lovely!

I wasn’t sure why I’d read immediately after I finished this book. I was drawn in by the premise of the book, but it turned out a bit different than I’d imagined. I did enjoy it, and learned about a piece of history I didn’t know anything about. The interesting part was that the dialogue felt modern. I mean I don’t know how people spoke or how their thoughts came across a page, but it felt like Adelaide was in 2023 at times. I liked some of the characters, but understood who the villains were early on. They still exist, and will ask for progress only for themselves because they’d rather be closer to the most powerful than make things universally better for marginalized groups. This review is longer than I intended it to be, but I liked the book. I’ll probably read more from this author but prefer to dive in without reading the synopsis.

Good but could have been better. The author had too many ideas going on toward the end that were not explained. The ending seemed rushed.

I really liked this book - the history is interesting and the characters are well drawn. I didn't think the horror was that scary and a few parts were a bit silly to me but overall this is a great story about family, revenge, and the meaning of forgiveness.

I knew going in that this was horror and historical. And yet the opening was still startling, and the slowly developing creeping dread was amazingly well done. I greatly appreciate that the majority of shitty things that could happen were alluded to, and not put on the page.

This was hard going at times, not least because there are so many things that can go wrong for people living alone with limited resources in winters with much snow, and the 'how will the character(s) get through this' was exhausting.

The story is incredibly complex, nuanced and layered, and I appreciated it all the more as each layer was revealed. The characters are amazing, the worldbuilding jumps off the page, the writing is sparse and yet lush, and the pacing is exquisite. Highly recommended.
