The audiobook narrator was great, I enjoyed the writing and characters. However, something about this book has something missing. I can’t tell you what but after finishing I just felt nothing strong about this book (whether it be good or bad).

Maybe it was the genre not being my go to….Maybe I didn’t understand how the horror elements were supposed to be scary…Maybe I didn’t connect to any of the characters….Maybe the pacing was too slow for my taste…But I’m surprised this novel didn’t put me in a reading slump.

This had a lot of potential but I think it should've been two different stories.

Learning about women homesteading in Montana during this era really intrigued me, and I felt like that could've been a story in itself.

The premise of the secret in the steamer trunk really grabbed me at the beginning. And the mystery of the Mudges. Once the secret is revealed and you enter Act 2, it sort of lost me from a horror perspective.

I really loved the mix of genres in this book, the setting, the mystery and the concept. However, the pace sped up too much in the last 150 or so pages, and I feel like the story wrapped up too neat and perfect. I’d give the first half of the book 5 stars and the second half 2. The first half feels like a really cool, well written feminist western horror. The second half feels a tad fanfiction-y.

The horror element in this book mostly worked for me. I felt unsettled with the mystery of it all. But as things unfolded I was disappointed - I didn't feel close or connected to the characters (maybe that was intentional? they had to be hardened to survive in Montana?). unfortunately I also didn't feel the connections to many of the characters with each other. I also had no sense of how much time had passed, and how Adelaide continued to have food to eat since there isn't much mention of her work on the homestead. Rating is more of a 2.5, somewhere between "it was ok" and "I liked it".
