there’s so much i loved about this! the character relationships were so warm and palpable, i really appreciated seeing the interactions and conversations, especially the tender little moments they’d share!  i’m not left with many questions and honestly i can say i’m happy with the story in a way i didn’t expect! so much of this reminds me of other stories like pedro paramo and nope. i also just love this writer’s voice in general :)
with carlotta and francisco it was sad to not see them more because i was interested in their connection to everything or more about what they know. i guess for plot purposes they served to be the first to not see elizabeth as a monster, but i wish they could have had a bit more! idk how but somehow!

I feel like Stephan from the old SNL skit when I talk about Lone Women. Spoiler free review is that this book has a lot going on and I never predicted any of it. I can see how others might find the story uneven or confusing, but I Iiked Adelaide enough to be invested in her bizarre journey.

Spoiler version (out of context)

This book has EVERYTHING. The Montana Homestead Act. A family of blind bandits. Demon!? A large theatre organ. Lesbian washer women. Sugar Beets. A trans child. Literal and metaphorical curses. Twins.

A great read. I went into this story with zero context other than the fact that it was creepy, and that was all I needed.

First half had a southern gothic vibe that I could not get enough of, and the second half had me on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Definitely enjoyed it!
