Well, that wasn’t great. Unlikable main character ✔️ chapters describing his daily chores that added nothing to the plot ✔️ no real reasons as to why what happened happened (yes there’s speculation but soooo loose come on). There was no sense of anything the entire book no dread or anticipation nothing. Even the end all of a sudden with one witness the tides turned? What? That was it? At least it what short.

Alternating between the past and the present, readers learn of the return of Elijah Leith to his childhood home following the death of his father and failure of his writing career, through his doomed return to his first love, Nakita, and awkward few months spent in limbo seeing the beautiful Dr. Erin Landry. But Elijah's life comes to a standstill when Dr. Landry is found dead, a murder intended to look like a suicide, pulled straight out of Elijah's novel. Who is framing Elijah, and why? As the town turns against him, his hope drains, and it looks as though he'll never get to live out the life he dreamed of.

None of the characters struck me as particularly complex, and I found the thriller aspect of the story lacking; it was clear from early on IMO who the killer was. I also wasn't really engaged by the romance, the will-they-won't-they and Elijah's pitiful rebound with the beautiful but ~emotionally void~ doctor. The trial was quick, the sheriff didn't seem to care much for proper procedure, but hey, it was the early 90s so things were probably a little more lackadaisical then. All in all, not what I'd hoped for.
