The ending of this trilogy was absolutely incredible but, my god, it did not need to be this long.

So I could just not keep my head in this book, I keep getting distracted while reading it. I don’t remember having that this bad the first time I read it. I still really enjoyed the story.

I think I enjoyed the civil war aspects of this more than the focus on the relationship between Julian and Emma, and there was a lot of focus on Julian and Emma, which I think is the main reason why it took me so long to finish this one. That’s not to say that I hated the moments with J&E but I did not engage with them as much as say with Mark or Kieran or Helen.

I did very much enjoy the return of Brother Snackariah aka Jem Carstairs aka the love of my life. He should appear in every Shadowhunter book just because I want him there. And seeing Tessa again as incredible.

There was a moment, I think when I started the second part of this book, where I thought that it seemed a little bit like the plot had wandered away. Seeing J&E in Thule would have been really interesting, if it had lasted for more than two or three chapters. It could have led to some really interesting conflict later on down the line.

I do want to know what Cassie has planned for Kit though. I think out of the new characters, he was my favourite even if he spent most of this book trying to stop Ty from doing the most ridiculous thing ever. These Blackthorns and necromancy. It needs to end.

There are a number of characters that I would love to see in future books, but I am not including Julian and Emma on that list. Emma on her own is ok, Emma with anyone other than Julian is great, Julian has about as much personality as a bag of flour and he irritated me. I get that a lot was dumped on him after the Dark War but that does nothing to make me like him sadly.

About once a year I crave a Cassie Clare book, and I think when that feeling hits it's because I love how rich her writing is. It's not rushed, and she really has a way of telling stories in this unique world she's created. And this time, though it wasn't a favorite, didn't disappoint either. I love the Blackthorn family, she did such a good job at making them each feel real and precious. Especially Julian and his paint and pancakes. I did however, feel like there were too many POV's for me, it made it hard for me to stay invested at times. In fact my favorite part of this book was the chunk where I'm now realizing the POVs were temporarily minimized. (I also just found that segment super interesting itself though). Also, I didn't like outcome of the parabatai curse, it was hard to imagine it looking cool and not weird. The last chapter though was so fun and made my heart so happy, it felt like a great way to wrap everything up with some Cassie Clare magic. Overall, I wish I had loved it a bit more for how long the book was, but it was still a good shadowhunter novel nonetheless if that is what you're craving♡

Perfect conclusion to an amazing series - if you love urban fantasy filled with angst, forbidden love, friendship, found family etc, you need to read Shadowhunters
